यदि बिंदु A(x, 2), B(-3, -4) तथा C(7, -5) संरेखी हैं, तो x को मान ज्ञात कीजिए।

ऊँचाई 45 सेमी तथा व्यास 4 सेमी वाले धातु के एक ठोस बेलन को पिघला कर 6 सेमी व्यास वाले ठोस गोले बनाए गए। ठोस गोलों की संख्या ज्ञात कीजिए।

प्रश्न संख्या 7 से 12 तक प्रत्येक प्रश्न के 2 अंक हैं।

भाजक के उस प्रधान घटक को ढूंढिए जिसे सरल रूप से व्यक्त की गई तर्कसंगत संख्या \(6.\bar { 12 }\) में व्यक्त किया है।

Question 8.
द्विघात समीकरण ज्ञात कीजिए जिसके शून्यकों का योग तथा गुणनफल क्रमशः √3 तथा \(\frac { 1 }{ \surd 3 }\) हो।

Question 9.
एक आयत ABCD में, E, AD को मध्यबिंदु है। यदि AD = 40 m तथा AB = 48 m है तो EB का मान ज्ञात कीजिए।

सिद्ध कीजिए कि 3 + 2√3 एक अपरिमेय संख्या है।

Question 14.
एक आदमी की मासिक आय उसकी पत्नी की मासिक आय से ₹ 600 अधिक है। आदमी की आय के दसवें भाग तथा पत्नी की आय के छठे भाग का योग ₹ 1,500 है, जो कि उनकी मासिक बचत है। उनकी मासिक आय ज्ञात कीजिए।

Question 15.
जाँच कीजिए कि x – 1, बहुपद x3 – 8x2 + 19x – 12 का एक गुणनखंड है या नहीं। विभाजन एल्गोरिथ्म को सत्यापित कीजिए।

Question 16.
यदि दो समान त्रिभुज ABC और DEF की परिधि क्रमशः 50 cm और 70 cm और ∆ABC = 20 cm के एक तरफ है तो ∆DEF के संबंधित पक्ष को ढूंढिए।

यदि बिंदु A(-2, 1), B(a, b) तथा C(4, -1) संरेखी हैं तथा a – b = 1 है तो a तथा b के मान ज्ञात कीजिए।

आकृति में, 12 सेमी भुजा वाली एक समबाहु त्रिभुज ABC के अंतर्गत एक वृत्त खींचा गया है जिसका केंद्र O है। अंत:वृत्त की त्रिज्या ज्ञात कीजिए तथा छायांकित भाग को क्षेत्रफल ज्ञात कीजिए। [π = 3.14 तथा √3 = 1.73 लीजिए।]

एक किसान अपने खेत में 10 मी व्यास और 2 मी गहरी एक बेलनाकार टंकी को आंतरिक व्यास 20 सेमी व्यास वाले एक पाइप द्वारा नहर से जोड़ता है। यदि पाइप में पानी 4 किमी/घंटा की चाल से बह रहा है तो कितने समय में टंकी पूरी भर जाएगी?
अथवा
20 सेमी ऊँचाई और 60° शीर्षकोण वाले एक ठोस धातु के लंबवृत्तीय शंकु को उसकी ऊँचाई के बीचों-बीच से होकर जाते एक तल से दो भागों में काटा गया है जबकि तल शंकु के आधार के समांतर है। यदि प्राप्त शंकु के छिन्नक को \(\frac { 1 }{ 12 }\) सेमी व्यास वाले एक तार के रूप में खींचा जाता है, तो तार की लंबाई ज्ञात कीजिए।

प्रश्न संख्या 23 से 30 तक प्रत्येक प्रश्न के 4 अंक हैं।

Question 23.
सीता देवी गली के जानवरों को पेयजल उपलब्ध कराने के उद्देश्य से सड़क के किनारे आयताकार तालाब बनवाना चाहती है। यदि तालाब की लंबाई में 2 फुट की कमी तथा चौड़ाई में 1 फुट की वृद्धि कर दी जाए तो उसका क्षेत्रफल 3 वर्गफुट कम हो जाएगा। यदि इसकी लंबाई में 1 फुट की वृद्धि तथा चौड़ाई में कोई परिवर्तन न किया जाए तो इसका क्षेत्रफल 4 वर्गफुट बढ़ जाएगा। तालाब की लंबाई एवं चौड़ाई ज्ञात कीजिए।

ΔABC में, लम्ब AD तथा CE एक-दूसरे को बिंदु P पर प्रतिच्छेद करती हैं। सिद्ध कीजिए:

एक मोर एक 9 मी ऊँचे स्तंभ के शिखर पर बैठा है। स्तंभ के तेल से 27 मी की दूरी पर एक सांप स्तंभ के आधार पर स्थित छिद्र की ओर आ रहा है। सांप को देखकर मोर उसकी ओर झपटता है, यदि उन दोनों की गति समान है तो सांप अपने छिद्र से कितनी दूरी पर पकड़ा गया?

एक 60 मी ऊँची बिल्डिंग के शिखर से एक मीनार के शिखर तथा पाद के उन्नयण कोण तथा अवनमन कोण क्रमश: 30° तथा 60° हैं। बिल्डिंग तथा मीनार की ऊँचाइयों का अंतर तथा उनके बीच की दूरी ज्ञात कीजिए।

Question 29.
एक बैग में कार्ड हैं, जिन पर 1 से 49 तक की संख्याएँ अंकित हैं। इन कार्डों को अच्छी प्रकार से मिलाकर, उनमें से यादृच्छया एक कार्ड निकाला गया। प्रायिकता ज्ञात कीजिए कि निकाले गए कार्ड पर अंकित संख्या:
(i) एक विषम संख्या है।
(ii) 5 का गुणज है।
(iii) एक पूर्ण वर्ग संख्या है।

सुशांत के पास ऊपर से खुला उल्टे शंकु के आकार का एक बरतन है जिसकी ऊँचाई 11 सेमी तथा ऊपरी सिरे की त्रिज्या 2.5 सेमी है। यह बरतन पानी से पूरा भरा हुआ है। इस बरतन में 0.5 सेमी व्यास की धातु की गोलाकार गोलियाँ डाली गईं जिनसे बरतन के पानी का \(\frac { 2 }{ 5 }\) वाँ भाग बाहर आ गया। ज्ञात कीजिए कि इस बरतन में कितनी गोलियाँ डाली गईं। सुशांत ने ऐसा प्रबंध किया कि बरतन से निकली पानी सीधा फूलों की क्यारियों को सींच सके। सुशांत ने इस कार्य से किस मूल्य का प्रदर्शन किया।

Spices bring to mind images of tempting culinary art, fascinating travels and the bitter struggle for supremacy. Expressions like ‘Variety is the spice of life’ and ‘sugar and spice and all that is nice’ show how spellbound were men of letters about spices.

To Orientals, spices are indeed the soul of food. In the Western world, it evokes dreams of exotic tropical islands, exciting expeditions to find routes to the source and the rise and fall of empires. Columbus went westwards in 1492 from Europe to find a sea route to the land of spices but found the New world. Eight years later, Vasco da Gama went round Africa and touched Kozhikode on the South-West coast of India. Long before that, Arabs started trading with the Orient through land routes. During the 13th century, Marco Polo experienced the attraction of spices in his travels. Even the European conquests and trade arrangement in India and the East Indies have a lot to do with spices.

Thousands of years ago, great masters of Ayurveda (the Indian system of medicine), notably Susruta and Charaka, discussed in detail the use of spices for culinary and medicinal purposes. Enterprising soldiers of fortune took the knowledge of spices to Egypt. There they used spices and aromatic herbs in food, medicine, cosmetics and for embalming. The conquest of Egypt and Asia by Alexander the Great made spices an article of commerce in Mediterranean countries and later to central and Northern Europe. There are reports of pepper being used in meat, both to aid preservation and to mask the unwelcome odour of deterioration of quality during the long winter storage.

Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, and Theophrastus, a Greek scholar and botanist, wrote treatises on medicinal plants, including spices. India has been home of most of the major spices of the world with Kerala varieties dominating in international

The value of higher education cannot be underestimated considering the contemporary realities of the competitive marketplace. A higher education degree literally serves as the first impression of a jobseeker applying for employment. A college degree is a person’s pass to the business world and so work-related opportunities are enormous. Truth is, college degrees are never the same if we take into account the reputation of higher establishment as well as the prestige of a particular field of studies.

Today’s holders of college degrees have unprecedented opportunities of job search since the employment market has largely expanded through online domains, offering freelance and part-time vacancies. Though, in both real and virtual employment, it is always a person’s CV (resume) that is initially considered by an employer, in 95% of cases the inclusion of a college degree is a must to get a well-paid job.

Overall, college education provides students with appropriate knowledge and skills to be used later in real life circumstances and the working environment. However, career choices do not matter since the contemporary market is vast and enormous.

It was a wonderful experience to trek over 14 kilometres to reach the shrine from the bus terminus. The climb was rather steep, but with encouragement from the teachers accompanying us, we all were able to reach the shrine without a hitch.
On the way up, we stopped twice to refresh ourselves with tea and snacks available locally.
The cool breeze at the shrine was really invigorating, as we were really tired.
After attending the rituals at the temple, we had a delicious lunch before returning to the bus terminus the same evening. I will never forget this adventurous trip!

People who are constantly exposed to vehicular pollution are reported to suffer from more than average respiratory problems, allergies and general sickness. It is not just hitting the adults, but also the immunity of children, thus affecting the life expectancy levels of the country.
Therefore, this situation must be addressed with a stringent application of environmental laws. Switching to hybrid cars, adopting car pooling methods and promoting public transport are some measures that can be helpful in controlling the swift rise in pollution and its harmful effects.

Once upon a time there lived a poor woman who used to toil for hours for her only son Raj. She worked for a livelihood to buy medicine for her son who was suffering from cancer. She prayed to the Lord to revive her son. Lord Buddha asked the woman to collect three fistsful of gram from families who had never experienced any death in the family. In her pain, she went through self-realisation. She realised that death is inevitable and humans are mortal. It is in death that one receives salvation. This grim realisation brought a great consolation and peace to the old lady’s mind. The lady attained spiritual bliss in her realisation of accepting death as a certainty.

Once upon a time there lived a farmer named Kishan in Daulatpur village of Aligarh district. He was very hardworking and honest. His family members included his wife and four children. They were content with whatever income he earned and were living happily. Kishan worked very hard on his land and worked hard to grow his crops.

Unfortunately his hard work did not bring fruitful results and he suffered a lot. The major reason was that he could not use essential fertilisers and proper equipment to enhance the quality of his grains. As he was a poor farmer, he could not use modern materials and equipment. To improve the quality of seeds and to grow his crops better, he required a tractor and costly fertilisers. Finally he decided to buy a tractor. But he did not have enough money, so he had to mortgage his land. Ultimately, he mortgaged his land and sold his wife’s ornaments to buy costly diesel and fertilisers.

As a result, his crops grew faster and of better quality than before. This time he was very happy as it was a period of celebration for him and he was expecting to gain profit by selling his crops at a higher price. But unfortunately, due to a fall in foodgrain prices, he could not make profit by selling his crops. Now, he was left with him no money and was bound to accept his unchangeable fate.

This money is very important for the Brambles as it will be used in giving Harold the best education. However, Mrs Bramble does not like violence (like a bout of boxing) at all and it is one of her family’s values. Thus, Mrs Bramble gets upset due to a moral conflict between her family values and their, financial needs. I think it is justified for her to become upset because it is natural for a mother to worry about her son’s welfare. However, the important thing in such a situation is to overcome the worries and live on.

Forgiveness is a noble virtue which blesses both the giver and the receiver. It is very difficult to forgive those who offend us. It requires a lot of love and compassion, and most importantly, strength and tolerance to be able to forgive others.
In the poem ’Lord Ullin’s Daughter’, the father does not approve of the relationship between his daughter and the chieftain. He feels that his daughter’s marrying the chieftain of another clan would bring disgrace to his name, his family and his tribe. For him, his excessive pride and honour of his family name was more important than human life. The end is the tragic drowning of his daughter in the tempestuous sea before his own eyes. If he had practised the virtue of forgiveness, he could have reconciled with his daughter.

The Lagado academy is a satire on abstract or theoretical knowledge, which is pursued for its own sake, with no thought to the practical applications or consequences in the real world. Even now, huge amounts of public money are being spent worldwide on experiments that may or may not have long term results for mankind.
The Professor who was working on a project to extract sunbeams from cucumbers is a famous and often-quoted example of the seeming foolishness of academicians. Another scientist, whose hands and clothes were covered with filth, was trying to convert human excreta back to food. Yet another one was attempting to make gunpowder from ice. He was also planning to publish articles on malleability of fire. It is believed that the most ridiculous experiments and theories mentioned at the academy in the book had actually been carried out or proposed by the scientist members of the Royal Society of London for improving natural knowledge. This is a scientific society founded in 1660 which continues under the shortened name, The Royal Society. It had among its members such distinguished people as Isaac Newton and Robert Boyle.

Foolish Opportunist The farmer was the same huge creature whom Gulliver had first seen pursuing his companions. Gulliver was left alone in the island of Brobdingnag when the giant master, the farmer, took Gulliver from his servant and placed him on the ground. The farmer took Gulliver to his family. He was kind with Gulliver and offered him food. He understood that the relatively tiny Gulliver was as rational as he himself was and treated him gently. However, the farmer put Gulliver on display around Brobdingnag, which clearly showed that he would rather profit from his discovery than treat him as an equal. His cruel side was revealed when he nearly starved Gulliver to death. The farmer, as a character, represented the average Brobdingnagian’s poor intelligence, wielding an extraordinary power over Gulliver simply by the virtue of his immense size.

Commercial Minded He easily got influenced by his friend’s advice to utilise Gulliver as a commercial commodity for earning a profit. He earned as much as he could by showcasing Gulliver as an object of entertainment in towns. He even sold Gulliver to the queen to get rid of further expenses for Gulliver’s maintenance.

Three Men in a Boat
The three friends, Harris, George and Jerome (the narrator) decided to go on a holiday because they felt greatly stressed due to overwork. After debating whether they should go for a sea trip or a boating trip, they decided on taking a boating trip up the River Thames. It was an interesting experience, as they told old stories, laughed and played during the trip, thoroughly enjoying the journey. They had various escapades and Jerome also recounted many of his memories of his earlier trips which were really hilarious. All these activities left them exhausted, as they had to struggle for initially making all the arrangements for the trip, cooking while on the trip, dealing with the problems faced by Montmorency, the narrator’s dog, and many other problems. It wasn’t enjoyable to wake up early on a cold and wet morning everyday while on the trip. However, on the whole, it was an enjoyable trip and so its purpose, to de-stress them, was fulfilled.

Happy-go-Lucky J is the narrator of the story and appears to be a happy-go-lucky man. He has varied shades. At first he is a hypochondriac who thinks that he has all the diseases of the world. He likes to be the leader, which is clearly depicted from his behaviour when they pack for the boat.

Knowledgeable and Helpful He is also fond of animals and shows considerable knowledge about the things around him. Like his two friends, he is also vain but more sensible and practical. He also has a helpful side which becomes apparent in the incident of the cheese. He is a true philosopher whose soul dwells in romance and imagination.

Aesthetic Sense As a man of strong imagination, J is a man having his head often in the clouds. He is found to be a great observer of nature as well as the human mind, as he comments about his other two friends. He also has a keen sense of aesthetics as he praises the glory of Kingston and its art and artisans as well as in praising the China dog as a specimen of craft. He even critiques his friends’ choices of clothing and gestures.

Ayurveda or the science of life, is an ancient system of Indian medicine th^t is 4000 years old.
According to Ayurveda, health depends on the normal balance of three elements of the body – vata (air), pitho (bile), and kapha (phlegm).
Information about the system with proof is contained in two important medical treatises in Sanskrit language – the Charaka Samhita and the Sushruta Samhita, considered as belonging to the physician Charaka, and Sushruta, who was a surgeon. These compilations are according to the latest and updated medical knowledge made in the 1st century AD and later in the 7th century AD. Another work, widely followed in recent times is Vaghbhatta’s ‘Ashtangahridayam’.

Sushruta identified as many as 1200 diseases, including tuberculosis and small pox. Ayurvedic treatment is largely dietetic (food prescribed) and medicinal. All drugs used are obtained from indigenous plants. Charaka lists 500 medicinal plants, and Sushruta mentions 760. In the olden days, physicians used to collect the plants and prepare the drugs themselves. Many of these have finally appeared in Western pharmacopoeias (books describing drugs).

Ancient Ayurveda included advanced surgical practices. Details of instruments for different operations are given in the classical texts. Even plastic surgery was done, particularly for the restoration of an amputated (cut off) nose, by transplanting tissue from the cheek. Modern surgeons have adopted this technique. Sushruta describes 20 sharp and 101 blunt surgical instruments including knives of various patterns.

During the British rule, large sections of the population, especially in the rural areas, continued to rely on Ayurveda. But Allopathy (Western system of medicine) was officially encouraged by the British. Since independence, however, Ayurveda has received official recognition. Ayurvedic universities and colleges have been started and integrated courses set up combining the study of ancient remedies and modern medicine. Many research institutions are now documenting ancient health practices and herbal remedies.

Brought up in the shadow of the rise of India’s service industry boom, this group feels it can be at least as good, if not better, than anyone else in the world. This confidence has been demonstrating a great propensity to consume, throwing away ageing ideas of asceticism and thrift. Even those who do not have enough to consume today feel that they have the capability and opportunity to do so.

The economic activity created by this combination of a growing labour pool and rising consumption demand is enough to propel India to double-digit economic growth for decades. One just has to look at the impact that the baby boomers in the US had over decades of economic activity, as measured by equity and housing prices. This opportunity also represents the greatest threat to India’s future. If the youth of India are not properly educated and if there are not enough jobs created, India will have forever lost its opportunity. There are danger signs in abundance.

India’s IT and BPO industries are engines of job creation, but they still account for only 0.2 per cent of India’s employment. Employment creation needs an abundant supply of capital. Controls on foreign investment have resulted in China getting five times the foreign direct investment or an advantage of US$ 200 billion over the past five years. The growing interest in India by global private equity firms augurs well as they represent pools of patient and smart capital, but they too face many bureaucratic hurdles.

After watering my little shrub in the school garden and attaching a paper label on it with my name, I felt great pleasure this year, l had planted a rose plant as a member of our school team on ‘World Environment Day’ by taking a cutting from a rose plant from a nursery. Gardening as an activity during the zero period this month has been very exciting. The colour of the flowers of my plant is pink. Every day I use scissors to trim the branches and water the plant regularly to foster the shrub to grow faster. I have decided to decorate the school pulpit used for morning assembly with roses that would bloom from this plant. This will also showcase my gardening skills. I am very excited to experience the growth of my plant just as a mother gets excited on the growth of her child. More about the growth of the rose plant will be given in tomorrow’s entry. Good Night.

Students teasing and making fun of other students is a common sight in classrooms, buses, playgrounds etc of schools. It is considered healthy to cement social bonds between them, but it may also sometimes take the form of bullying. Physically beating or hitting another student, torturing him or her mentally or emotionally and abusing them verbally are forms of bullying that may cause the victims to feel depressed, lower the victim’s morale or cause him or her to suffer an “inferiority complex.
Students, particularly senior students, must not indulge in such activities under any circumstances. If at any point of time teachers or other elders sense any discomfort between students, they must try to resolve the matter immediately through discussion. The matter should not be allowed to fester till it reaches an explosive point. Each one of us is special in his or her own way and this fact needs to be respected by all.

Once upon a time, there was a yogi who lived in a forest and taught yoga. One of his disciples was a young prince.The yogi explained the power of yoga to the prince and said, “It is in meditation that one gains concentration”. In course of time, he started gaining physical and mental strength. He meditated and reached a high level of performance with concentration.

Several years later, it was said that this ascetic yogi did not take any money as remuneration for telling the people’s future, as he believed that money would be a curse to his hard-earned power. His fame spread all over the country and many persons came to take his advice on what actions they should take in their lives so that they succeed in whatever they do. He benefited a large number of people and lived to the ripe age of 93.

One morning Rohan went to the bank as he had some important work there. While standing in the queue, waiting for his turn, he saw three men enter the bank. The guard was not standing at his usual assigned place at that time. These men did not seem like the usual customers because they were wearing caps and one of them carried a big bag. Rohan became suspicious. Suddenly Rohan heard people start shouting and screaming. He realised that these men were robbers. The robbers snatched the strongroom keys from the bank manager and headed towards the room. Rohan, being a frequent visitor to the bank, knew about the place where the secret alarm was installed in the bank. He knew that, as a responsible citizen, it was his duty to help the bank fight against crime. He quietly moved towards the secret alarm and pressed it. The police control room received the signal and rushed a group of policemen with arms to the bank. The robbers were caught red-handed while they were trying to flee from the bank with the cash and other valuables. The police thanked Rohan for his presence of mind. After some days Rohan was felicitated with a bravery award by the Commissioner of Police.

The poet, while passing through a valley, heard the ‘melancholic strain’ of the solitary reaper singing a sad song while harvesting the grain. He tried to guess the probable reason behind that sad tone. Although he could not understand the lyrics, as they were in the local language, he thought she might be singing about the death or illness of a loved one, some family problem or for the lives lost in the war which had recently taken place.
The fact that the poet could feel the intensity and passion in the reaper’s song without understanding the lyrics indicates its expressiveness. He could feel the song resounding in his ears as he moved on. He finally said that he would cherish its memory in his heart forever. The values that impressed him were the song’s simplicity, its harmony with nature, the reaper’s devotion towards work and her quality of taking sorrows lightly.

The Bishop considered the convict as a friend and a fellow human being instead of as a criminal. So the Bishop treated him with love and respect. Excessive torture by the prison guards had made the convict a victim of extreme frustration and negativity. Even after receiving kindness and compassion from the Bishop, the convict reacted with a criminal intent and stole the silver candlesticks which were very dear to the Bishop, as they had been presented to him by his mother when she was dying.
Thus, when the convict was caught by the gendarmes (French police) and the candlesticks discovered on him, the Bishop informed the Sergeant that he had himself gifted the candlesticks to the convict. The Bishop’s words made the convict regret his action. He was overwhelmed by the Bishop’s love and felt that he had once again become a human being. Thus, the Bishop succeeded in proving that the human body is the temple of the living God.

Long Reading Text (Novel)

As soon as Gulliver reached the shores of Lilliput, he fell asleep due to extreme exertion. He woke up after several hours. He was amazed to find himself bound with ropes. He was surrounded by a crowd
of exceptionally small human creatures who were six Inches in height. These little creatures were shooting arrows on Gulliver from their bows and thereby causing him much pain. Gulliver was not released even after a long time, but was offered food and drinks. The Lilliputians also made arrangements to transport Gulliver to the capital city and prepared a machine for this purpose. Gulliver’s huge size surprised the little creatures. The king himself came out to look at Gulliver.

As Gulliver lay still, the great Lord addressed him in a language he could not understand. Gulliver was pinned to the ground but he could move his head slightly left or right. However, on Gulliver’s request made through his gestures, they fed him well and served him two hogsheads of wine mingled with a sleeping potion. Gulliver remained docile to the Lilliputians. They even loosened the cords enough for Gulliver to help his digestive processes.

The novel is itself a journey for Lemuel Gulliver to explore across the seas. Throughout the novel, Gulliver was driven by his insatiable thirst for exploring the unknown. As a travelogue, the novel had opened up vistas to understand that Gulliver is a critical observer as well as an entertainer as he travels around the world. However, he is not a hero at all.
He was naive and good to the Lilliputians. The land of Lilliput was in exact visual contrast to that of the Brobdingnagians. In this latter nation, Gulliver underwent the unnerving experiences of almost being devoured by a giant rat, taken captive by pirates, shipwrecked on faraway shores, held hostage by an eleven year old girl, and shot in the face with poison arrows. He faced them all with his wit and courage. Gulliver was also gullible, as he did not understand the various ways in which the Lilliputians exploited him. He was quite adept in navigational calculations and the details of seafaring. He was far less able to reflect on himself and his nation in any profoundly critical way. He rarely talked about his feelings and so kept things to himself.

Three Men in a Boat
When the topic of a one week’s holiday was discussed by the three friends, Harris rejected the idea of going to retreat, because he felt that life without comforts and amenities will be difficult. He suggested a sea trip instead. However, the narrator rejected this idea with the argument that a sea trip is enjoyable only if it is meant for a few months. For a trip of one week, it is not a good idea. He gave the reason that one is in high spirits on the first day of the sea trip. However, the very next day, one feels sea-sick, and regrets having come on the trip at all.

It takes one three or four days to be cured of the sea-sickness. Thus, by the time one gets accustomed to the sea.and starts enjoying the trip, it is over, and one comes back without relaxing, enjoying the trip or doing any good to one’s health. In this regard, the narrator was reminded of the experience of his brother-in-law, who, for the sake of his health, went on a sea trip for one Meek with a return ticket from London to Liverpool. But as he reached Liverpool, he had grown so sick of the sea-voyage that he sold his ticket of return to somebody and came back by train.

A Lover of Freedom Montmorency was a fox terrier and J’s pet who recovered from ill-health to prove that he was a fighter. He always carried an attitude that he was free to do anything he wanted. Montmorency was called by the author as an angel sent to Earth. He had a gentle noble expression, which brought tears to the eyes of elderly folk. However, it was his nature to create trouble.

Mischievous Troublemaker Montmorency’s mischievousness was kept hidden under his innocent look. The author had to pay for the chickens Montmorency had killed and had to drag him out of many street fights with other dogs. Once Montmorency killed the neighbour’s cat and on one occasion, he had kept a man stuck in his own tool shed for about two hours.

Curious and Cowardly Montmorency turned out to be a high spirited dog in performing tricks. He was always curious about everything. But whenever he had faced determined adversaries like cats, he fell back.

The morning of 6th August, 1945 in Hiroshima, Japan did not begin in any exceptional way; the people had no idea that they were about to be a part of one of the most significant mornings in all of history. At 8:15 am, the United States of America (USA) forces dropped the first atomic bomb, ironically called, when one considers the enormity of the bomb’s significance, ‘Little Boy’. Three days later, the USA dropped a second bomb, nicknamed ‘Fat Man’ on Nagasaki. Historically, the use of the atomic bombs is seen as a decision that the United States made during WWII in order to end the war with Japan. Regardless of the motivation for using the bombs, they left a heavy death toll. The bombing of Hiroshima not only changed the physical and emotional health and culture of the Japanese people, but also changed the world.

The population in Japan in October 1940 was 73,114,308; in November 1945 the population was 71,998,104. Japan was visibly a thriving country that was hit very hard by the bombing.

In 1945, most people in the United States thought that it was absolutely necessary to bomb Japan. They thought that the bombings put an end to the war and saved countless lives. On the other hand, some felt that Japan’s situation in 1945 was already ‘catastrophically hopeless’, and, prior to the bombing, Japanese leaders were preparing to surrender in the summer of 1945. It has even been suggested that the United States had decoded Japan’s messages, and were aware of the impending surrender, thus making the horrors unleashed on Hiroshima completely unnecessary. Lastly, and most disturbingly, the bomb may have been dropped because of President Truman’s desire to intimidate the USSR. It is unlikely that we will know the complete truth of why the bomb was dropped, but what is distressingly clear are the effects of the bomb.

The bombings crippled the nation of Japan for many years. After the bombings, any humans that survived the initial blast were suffering from radiation exposure.

Laughter relaxes the whole body. A good, hearty laugh relieves physical tension and stress, leaving your muscles relaxed for up to 45 minutes afterwards. Laughter also boosts the immune system. It decreases stress hormones and increases immune cells and infection-fighting antibodies, thus improving your resistance to disease. It triggers the release of endorphins, the body’s natural ‘feel-good’ chemicals. Endorphins promote an overall sense of well-being and can even temporarily relieve pain.

Laughter protects the heart. It improves the functioning of blood vessels and increases blood flow, which can help protect you against a heart attack and other cardiovascular problems.

Laughter makes you feel good; and the good feeling that you get when you laugh remains with you even after the laughter subsides. Humour helps you keep a positive, optimistic outlook through difficult situations, disappointments and physical or emotional loss. More than just a respite from sadness and pain, laughter gives you the courage and strength to find new sources of meaning and hope. Dear Diary
I want to share one of the most beautiful experiences of my life with you today. I was the lucky one out of the 13 interns to accompany ISRO’s head astronaut Mr. PK Singhal on India’s first manned mission to the Moon. As soon as we covered the long distance and reached our destination safely, our happiness knew no bounds. We were able to plant the Indian tricolour in a prominent place on the moon’s surface.
The Moon is breathtakingly beautiful. ‘Zero gravity’ hops, a rugged and grainy surface and everything else was heavenly. We explored the craters and peaks of the moon for two hours near to where our spacecraft had landed. We also collected some samples of the moon’s soil for analysis by Indian scientists. Then we got the command from ISRO headquarters to return. We blasted off back to Earth immediately.
I feel really proud and grateful to have got a chance to experience something people only dream of.

For many centuries, people played kicking games with different kinds of balls. Soccer, also called ‘Association Football’, to distinguish it from ‘American Football, developed from these games and has become the world’s most popular sport, being played in over 140 countries. The game is known as ‘football’ because the hands of the players (except the goalkeeper) are not allowed to touch the ball in play during a game. The name ’soccer’ comes from the high socks that players wear under their boots.

The game consists of two teams of eleven players each contesting each other to put the ball into the opponents’ goal. The normal time duration of a game is 90 minutes, being divided into two halves of 45 minutes each with a short interval in between. The winner is the team whichrscores more goals during the duration of a game. The first soccer World Cup was held in 1930. which was won by Uruguay.

Rama ultimately threw the bread, but it fell in the drain. As the dog tried to attack Rama in frustration, he hit it with a stick.

A middle aged man was passing by and saw Rama’s act of mischief. He called Rama and asked him, “Why are you hitting the dog?” Rama brushed away the question with laughter. The man offered Rama a ten rupee coin and advised him not to hurt street dogs. He also asked Rama to buy some bread and feed the dog himself. Rama then bought another loaf of fresh bread. He lifted the dog in his arms and fed him the bread. The dog ate the bread quickly as it was hungry. Then it licked Rama’s face to show its gratitude. Rama was now a changed boy.

The day before yesterday, I saw an old lady sitting in the park and looking at me continuously. It was during my summer vacations and I had come home. It was my final year in college and I had secured a job in a reputed company. Playing with my nephew in the park, I was trying to match up to his energy and stamina. We were playing handball when I noticed that lady. She had been looking at me. She seemed old. She was thin and had grey hair.

I could not control my curiosity and went to her. I asked her why was she looking at me continuously and if I could be of any help to her. She took some time to react, but instead of words, tears came out of her eyes. She finally spoke and told me that looking at me she was reminded of her son. The old lady’s son was a soldier in the army. He had lost his life while fighting a battle against our enemies. He died serving the nation. The old lady was proud to be the mother of a martyr.

I felt really touched by her loss and tried my best to console her. I hugged her and appreciated the patriotic zeal of her son. She thanked me and asked me if she could look at me and my nephew play in the park. I smiled and agreed.

Yes, I think the convict should have been given a second chance. This is because he was not a thief by intention. The circumstances were such that they forced him to steal. He had stolen food for his ailing wife as he was unable to earn money due to not having a job. However, he was caught and imprisoned, due to which his wife died due to starvation. If the convict had been given a second chance as a noble act from the humanitarian point of view, he would have improved his ways and worked hard to earn the food that he had earlier been forced to steal. He would also have been able to save his wife’s life, thus giving him mental peace. However, what the convict overlooked were the values of honesty and his responsibility towards society. He had no right to steal anything from anybody, even food. He could have begged for it if he did not have money to pay for it.

Yes, I agree that the poet herself is responsible for neglecting her teeth and damaging them. She herself confesses that she had a weakness for sticky and sweet food. After eating all this sticky food, she did not brush her teeth, which caused the teeth to decay and created cavities in them. She also admits her fault of showing no respect towards her teeth by brushing them hurriedly, carelessly and half-heartedly.
The important values we learn from her experience are that we must take responsibility for what we do and how we mould our lives. The consequences of our deeds are our responsibility. Further, we must not make fun of someone wearing false teeth, as one day the same problem may occur with us. Another important lesson we learn from this poem is that we must visit a dentist regularly to keep our teeth healthy and cavity-free.

The master horse was listening to Gulliver carefully when he was describing the wars in his country. Gulliver told the master horse that wars take place due to several reasons. Sometimes a war takes place due to ambitions of princes or corruption of ministers, and at other times wars happen for gaining power over the weak. When Gulliver completed his discourse on wars, the master horse asked him to stop and said that the shame of waging war was greater than the danger, because the master horse imagined that battles were fought bare-handed.

It was difficult for him to believe that the Yahoos could kill each other in such great numbers as their flat face prevented them from biting each other. Then Gulliver described about the destructive weapons of wars the nations of Europe possessed.

After listening to the description of the wars and destructive weapons, the master was filled with hatred for the country of Gulliver. The vices of human race that led them to wage wars were scornful to him and he came to detest the whole human race.

Influential Hypocrite Flimnap was the lord high treasurer of Lilliput who harboured a feeling of hatred and enmity against Gulliver. Outwardly, he tried to appear more friendly than he usually was. Flimnap had complained to the king of how Gulliver was costing the state treasury exorbitantly. He was successful in manipulating the king against Gulliver and place the conditions of impeachment officially against Gulliver. He influenced Skyresh Bolgolam to join the conspiracy.

Animosity Towards Gulliver He blamed Gulliver of having relations with his wife and utilised this made-up issue to stimulate the conspiracy theory. So he was successful in insisting on the emperor to take the first possible opportunity to throw Gulliver out of Lilliput. This resulted in a lot of animosity against Gulliver.

Three Men in a Boat

George was fond of playing the banjo, although J writes that he had never learned to play the banjo. He faced too much all-round discouragement from everybody. He tried on two or three evenings to get a little practice, but it was never a success. Harris’ language used to be enough to unnerve any man. When George offered to play the banjo, Harris objected by saying he had a headache. He said he did not feel strong enough to stand it. Moreover, Montmorency would sit and howl steadily right through the performance. George never liked this reaction from Montmorency but Harris said that he had a musical ear and it was George’s banjo playing that made him howl like that. Even later, when George tried to play his banjo, he was discouraged by one and all. His attempts were a great disaster. His landlady objected when he played at home. When he played at night, neighbours called the police. He was arrested and was asked to keep it shut for six months. He grew very disappointed over the whole business and was finally forced to sell it.

Disorganised and Clumsy Harris always reminded the narrator of his Uncle Podger. Both of them readily involved others in actually having any task done. Once Uncle Podger undertook the job of hanging a picture on the wall in which he came out as a very clumsy and inefficient person. All the members of the family stood in attendance when Podger tried to stick a nail in the wall. He struggled hard to hang the picture and even dropped it down.

Pretender Harris too, like Uncle Podger, wanted to take the credit for doing something which he actually did not do. When the three friends decided to make a list of things to be carried for the trip, Harris, instead of doing the work himself, only asked the narrator to bring him a piece of paper and asked George to get him the catalogue of groceries. He also wanted somebody to give him a pencil to write with. Thus Harris, without actually doing anything, pretended to take upon himself the burden of the whole task. Thus, Harris and Uncle Podger resembled each other and were identical in the context of their responses to a situation.
