Question 31.
Give that 2 is a root of the equation 3x² – p (x + 1) = 0 and that the equation px² – qx + 9 = 0 has equal roots, find the values of p and q.
Solution:
3x² – p (x + 1) = 0
⇒ 3x² – px – p = 0
2 is a root of the equal It will satisfy it
3(2)² – p(2) – p = 0

Substituting the value of x = -1 and also x = 3, then
(-1 )² + p(-1) + q = 0
⇒ 1 – p + q = 0
⇒ p – q = 1
⇒ p = 1 + q …(i)
and (3)² + p x 3 + q = 0
⇒ 9 + 3p + q = 0
⇒ 9 + 3 (1 + q) + q = 0 [From(i)]
