Question 1.

1. Airbus says it has turned the corner after a crisis connected to production problems
and turmoil in the boardroom at its A380 super-jumbo project that has gone on for the past year. On the first day of the Paris air show, Airbus announced a raft of orders. It is competing with Boeing, its American rival, for the title of the largest plane maker in the world. Boeing is expected to reveal the numbers of orders for its 787 Dream liner soon. Airbus orders unveiled on Monday included Qatar Airways confirming a $16bn order for 80 A3 50 Airbus planes and ordering three A3 80 super-jumbos for about $750m. .

2. Boeing and Airbus are also competing for orders from aircraft leasing firms. Orders from these companies – who rank highly among the biggest global buyers of aircraft – are often regarded as an indication of how successful a model will be in the long term. Airbus also secured orders from US Airways that are worth $ lObn for 22 of its A350 jets, 60 A320s and ten of its A330-200 wide-body planes.

3. A few months ago, Airbus unveiled a major cost-cutting programme aiming to reduce the workforce in Europe by 10000, as well as announcing a group restructuring. “I can tell you with full confidence that Airbus is back and fully back, as you have started noting yesterday as demonstrated by our first day announcements,” said Mr Gallois on the second day of the air show.

4. However, Boeing also announced a deal with General Electric (GE) on the show’s first day. GE’s commercial aviation services placed an order for six 777 Boeing freighters valued at around $1.4bn, to be delivered in the last quarter of 2008.

5. A Wall Street Journal website report, quoting the Delta operating chief yesterday said that Delta Air Lines were on the verge of ordering as many as 125 Boeing 787 jetliners by the end of this year. However, a spokesman for Delta later said that it had been having conversations “with several aircraft makers” and that “no final decision” had been made on future fleet purchases. (347 words)

Then he took off his earpieces, lifted the bag, and told us that the bag belonged to him and that he was going to get off at the last station. We were stunned, but recovered in time to ask him where he was all this while? His answer: he was in the compartment, leaning against the door, totally immersed in the music. Dear Diary
My grandfather is no more. I feel so dazed with my grandfather’s death that I can’t express my feelings. What a great human being he wasl He was a gem of humanism – cooperative, ready to help the needy, and also soft-hearted. He taught me the values of sympathy, love, affection, selflessness and compassion. He was well read and used to often quote from his reading to prove his point. He used to narrate stories to me when I was younger. I loved him so much as he constantly supported me whenever I needed him. I feel a great loss in his death. Though, he is no more to be my side in physical yet he is alive in my heart and guide me in difficult situation with his valuable advices he had taught me.
It has created a vacuum in my life.

This year I have celebrated my birthday the way I wanted to. My parents arrange a grand party for my friends. I have made the invitation card for my friends and my mother helped me to make invitation cards and to fill them up with names. She made a list of all the friends I wanted to call. Thereafter she took me to the market and bought balloons and streamers, masks and caps, etc to decorate the house with. We arranged the masks and caps in such a way that each friend of mine would pick one of his choices.
My father arranged some games for them and he became the referee for all our games. He arranged musical chairs, passing the parcel etc, and all the children enjoyed themselves. We had our cold drinks after the cake was cut by me. The cake was in the shape of a beautiful house with colourful fencing and big chunks of chocolate. I was drowned in gifts once my friends left and I went to bed with the satisfaction of having enjoyed the best birthday party of my life.

Finding me alone, a woman in a white saree approached me. She spoke very affectionately to me’and persuaded me to accompany her to the refreshment room for lunch. In the refreshment room I met an old classmate of mine having food with his mother. I had not met him after my mother’s death nine years ago. Buddy is Shaurya’s constant companion. He met him in a very unusual way. It was a sunny morning in the month of April. Shaurya was on an early morning stroll in the neighbourhood park. He was, as usual, completing his round of the park when suddenly he heard a low whimpering sound coming from a nearby bush. When he peeped inside, he saw a very cute small puppy. Its leg was injured and it was in great pain. He pulled it out and immediately took it to a nearby veterinary doctor. The doctor treated the puppy and cleaned its wound. Shaurya went back to the park and dropped the puppy where he had found him amidst the bushes. But to his surprise, the puppy followed him to his house. Shaurya’s mother did not like dogs but as the puppy was following him, he could not help but take the puppy inside and gave some milk to the puppy. Initially, Shaurya’s mother was not happy but the cute puppy wagged its tail very adorably at the mother.

Somehow Shaurya convinced his mother that he would look after the puppy and she need not worry about it. Shaurya named the puppy ‘Buddy’ and took it every day to the park in case anyone wanted to claim it, but no one did so. Soon the puppy became very friendly with Shaurya.

Answer 10.

‘Change is the law of nature’. Everything has to change with the passage of time the only thing that is permanent is the change itself.

In the lesson, Kezia, the Little girl, initially used to be afraid of her father as he would often scold her. Once due to her mother’s illness, she had to be looked after by her father who would fondly take her in arms. He also laid down beside her and tried to narrate a story or two. All this made Kezia realise that her father was not bad or rude. Even he had a kind and loving heart but for the circumstances, he could not express it frequently.

Therefore, it can be inferred from the lesson that circumstances force people to change or atleast control their behaviour, nature, attitude or overall personality. In general, no one is purely good or completely bad, it is rather time that influences one’s conduct.

Or

Some people lack basic human values. They do not want to help anybody without self-interest. They always want something in return. One goes to a temple or a church or to a Guru just because one wants something in return. The lady in the poem was a greedy woman. If she had known about Saint Peter and his power, she would have offered him her entire stock of cakes. However, she would have asked for some favours from him in return as she would know about his powers. But her unfriendly and greedy nature makes Saint Peter angry. He changed her into a woodpecker, which will always need to bore into hard dry wood with her beak to find food. Though, he maintains his cool most of the time but the selfish lady was cursed by him for being ungenerous.
Hence, the poem teaches us that one must not be greedy or selfish. We should always help the needy.

Answer 11.
Prashant shows the true leadership qualities. He helped the people of Ersama and motivates them for self help.
I think, young people can surely get together to help those affected during natural calamities. Being energetic and enthusiastic, youngsters can carry out difficult tasks very easily. They have the potential and capability to lead people. In times of floods or cyclones, they can also help to clean the surroundings of filth, dirt and dead bodies and can help to arrange food and shelter for the homeless. Living in the internet dominated era, we (young people) can ask for volunteers through social networking sites to come forward for the noble cause of helping the victims. Losing someone in a calamity is always painful, so we should help them to come out of the emotional trauma by proper counselling and therapy. We should try as much as we can to console them so they can live a normal life as early as possible.
Or
There are certain things in life, mere thought of which is frightening and bone chilling. Separation of a child from his/her parents seems to top the list of such scary thoughts. For days such a child might not care about food, one of the most basic needs, forget anything else like shelters, career or luxuries. The lesson clearly highlights this aspect of a lost child who instantly refuses to have the choicest of the offers made by a humble and noble stranger. The story in the lesson ends on a confusing note whether the lost child and his parents could re-unite or not. But on closely observing, it can be assumed that they would have re-united for a kind and understanding man had found the child who was constantly trying to console the child besides offering various things. Efforts of such a devoted person hardly go in vain so I would sincerly hope and believe in the happy reunion of their poor but lovely family. Parents are the epitome of love and affection and a child needs them in the difficult situation. Hence, re-union of them would be the perfect climax of the novel.
