Fundamentals

  • There are two types of nouns:Singular Noun and Plural Noun.
  • Singular Noun: When we speak for one person or one thing, we use the noun in singular form. Single means one.
    Examples:
    a. A man is smoking within the premises.
    b. A group of cows is called herd.
    c. Joy is what we want in our lives.
    d. Church is where Christians worship.
    e. This chair is made of plastic.
  • In these sentences, the nouns man, group, joy, church and chair are in singular forms. Plural Nouns: When we speak for more than one person or one thing, we use the noun in plural form.
    Examples:
    a. Few men are standing in the queue.
    b. The groups of cows, coming back to their sheds, are not milch cows.
    c. These chairs are made of plastic.
    d. Children should be given proper guidance.
    e. Keep the knives in a safe place.
  • In these sentences, the words men, groups, chairs, children and knives are plural-nouns.

Focus on ‘Y’ endings.

  • If in a noun, a vowel (a, e, i, o, u) comes before Y, just add ‘s’ to make its plural form. For example:Toy-Toys
  • If in a noun, a consonant comes before Y, you change it to ‘i’ and add ‘es’. For example: Cry-Cries

Focus on ‘Ch’, ‘Sh’, ‘S’ and ‘X’endings.

  • We add ‘es’ to singular nouns ending in ch, sh, s and x to make them plural. Singular – Plural

A pronoun is a word that can be used to take the place of a noun. The noun to be replaced can be the name of a person, place, animal or thing. Personal, Reflexive, Emphasising, Demonstrative, Interrogative, Possessive are the different types of pronouns. Personal Pronouns: Pronouns that stands for a person or a thing are called Personal Pronouns. i.e. I, we, you, he, she, it and they are personal pronouns. The pronoun must agree in number with the noun that it replaces. If the noun is in the singular form, the pronoun must also be in the singular form. And, if it is in the plural form, the pronoun must also be in the plural form.

Examples:
Singular: The boy is playing with his puppet. He has a sock puppet.
Plural: The boys are playing with their puppets. They have puppets of various colours.

Personal Pronouns have three forms of persons. The person who is speaking is called the first person. i.e. I, my, me, we, our, us. The one spoken to is called the second person. I.e. you, your, yours. The one spoken about is called the third person. i.e. he, she, it, they, their, them. The pronoun must agree with the noun in the gender that it represents. If the noun is in the feminine gender, the pronoun too must be in the feminine gender. Likewise, if the noun is in the masculine gender, the pronoun must be in the masculine gender.

Examples:

  • Masculine: Jill has a boyfriend. He comes across as a bit of a bore to her.
  • Feminine: John’s sister loves to eat pizza. She eats it almost every day.
  • Neuter: We have an old kitchen table. It has a broken leg.

A reflexive pronoun is used when the object of a sentence is the same as the subject. They either end in -self, as in the singular form, or -selves as in the plural form. The singular reflexive pronouns are: myself, yourself, himself, herself, itself. Plural reflexive pronouns include: ourselves, yourselves, themselves.

Examples:

  • He hurt himself.

The horse hurt itself. Emphasising Pronoun is used for emphasis are called emphasising pronoun. Examples: o I myself completed the homework. She herself say so. Demonstrative pronoun is used to point out specific person, place, thing or idea. This/that/these/those are demonstrative pronouns.

Good Habits

It is said that early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise. Going early to bed and waking up early is a good habit. A habit means repetition of the same action. There are other habits like brushing our teeth, taking a bath, wearing clean clothes, combing our hair etc., which helps us to look neat and healthy.
