The author’s grandfather had found Timothy. He had found him in Terai jungle near Dehra.

One day grandfather had gone to the forest with a hunting party. That day no member of the party could bag any ‘game. By chance, grandfather saw a little tiger about eighteen inches long. He picked him up and brought him home.

It was the cook Mahmoud who fed Timothy at the house of Grandfather.

Timothy was given only milk to begin with. Then he was put on a diet of raw mutton and cod-liver oil.

Timothy had two companions. These were Toto, the monkey and a small mongrel puppy.

The monkey was bold enough to pull the young tiger by the tail. When the tiger became angry, he would climb up the curtains.

At first Timothy seemed afraid of the puppy. He darted back with a spring if the puppy came close. Finally, he allowed the puppy to crawl on his back and rest there.

The little tiger cub was hiding among the roots of a banyan tree in the Terai jungle near Dehra. Grandfather found him there.

During the day, Timothy was most comfortable on the long sofa in the drawing-room. He slept at night in the cook’s quarters.

Abbu Khan lived in Almora.

Kalua was one of Abbu Khan’s goats. It broke loose and ran up the hills. There it had to fight a wolf. It fought bravely but in the end it was killed and eaten by the wolf.

The goats of hill breed love freedom. They do not like to be tied to a tree or a pole.

Abbu Khan had bought Chandni while it was very young. He decided to give it all the love and comfort which he could. So Abbu Khan thought that Chandni would not leave him.

Chandni felt like a child who had come to her parents for the first time. She was overcome with joy.

Abbu Khan could not understand why his goats embraced death one by one. He had warned them about the wolf. He gave them whatever they needed for a comfortable life. So Abbu Khan could not understand why they went to hills. They were killed by the wolf there.

One day Chandni asked Abbu Khan to give her permission to go to the hills. She said that if she stayed in his compound, she would die.

Abbu Khan was much attached to the goat. When the goat expressed its desire to go to the hills, he knew that this goat would also be killed. So the earthen pot fell from his hands.

Chandni was much pleased on reaching the hills. She felt like a child meeting her parents after a long separation.

Chandni refused to join the group of wild goats because she wanted to enjoy her new freedom by herself.

The bulgy nose was only as big as a small boot. The trunk was five feet long. Golu could only wiggle his nose from side to side. The bulgy nose could not pick up things like the trunk.

All these animals gave one and the same reply to Golu’s questions. They thought that Golu was naughty. They also felt that he asked very difficult questions.

Golu met mynah in the middle of a bush.

Golu ate a hundred sugar-canes, fifty dozen bananas and twenty five melons before starting for the Limpopo river.

Golu asked the python if he had ever seen a crocodile. He further asked him about the looks and the food of the crocodile.

Soapy’s hopes for the winter were to spend three months in the prison on Blackwell’s Island. There he could find a shelter apart from food and bed every night.

Soapy’s spirit was proud. If he went to any of these places, he had to do certain things to pay for what they gave him. They would want to know everything about his life. Soapy hated personal questions.

The head waiter had seen his broken shoes. This made him suspicious about Soapy’s intentions. So he did not let Soapy in.

At sixth Avenue, there was a shop with a wide glass window. Soapy had thrown a big stone and broken the glass. So people came running towards this shop.

The people who break glasses of windows do not stop there to talk to cops. So the policeman refused to consider Soapy as a probable offender.

Soapy asked the waiter to call a cop. The waiter, however, called another waiter. The two waiters threw Soapy upon his left ear on the hard street outside.

The episode of breaking the window (glass) by Soapy seems a good example of irony.

The old memories gave him new strength. He decided to reform himself. Thus the sight of the old church, had brought a sudden and wonderful change in Soapy.

Soapy’s first plan was to have some good dinner at some fine restaurant.

The policeman is referring to the orders given to him about college students. The orders were to let them shout because they did not hurt anyone. He thinks that Soapy is also a college student of that type.
