Dr. Varun : Please tell me something about the history and social life of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Maiguru : Andaman Islands have been a settlement of aboriginal tribes. These tribes are of Negrito origin. The tribes of Nicobar are of Mongoloid stock. Mythologically, the name Andaman comes from Hanuman. Later on there have been settlements from mainland of India. The social life is very peaceful here. People of all faith such as Hindus, Muslims, Christians and Sikhs etc, live here in complete peace and harmony. Inter-religion and inter-regional marriages are common. Because of such a way of life, one can see a Mini-India here living in peace and communal harmony.

Dr. Varun : That’s wonderful. Now tell me something about the places I should visit.

Maiguru : Andaman and Nicobar islands are full of scenic beauty. However, I tell you about some most important places of tourist interest. First you must visit the Cellular Jail. This is the place where the freedom-fighters of India were sent to languish. Every evening, there is a Sound and Light show which brings alive the struggle of those revolutionaries. Then you must visit MGMN Park at Wandoor. This large park is made-up of open sea, creeks and 15 small and large islands. Here you have a wonderful view of marine life through glass bottom boats, Scuba diving and snorkeling. The park offers amusement rides, safe water sports, nature trails and historic ruins of a Japanese Temple.

Other places, almost equally interesting are Chidiya Tapu, Collinpur, Madhuban and Mt. Harriet.

In this e-mail I am describing about the great and unique Andaman Islands. These islands are rightly called Emerald Islands. They are full of flowers and birds unknown in the mainland. The coastline is made of coconut trees. Underwater marine life and corals are the rare gifts of these islands.

Moreover, the Andamans have a historical link too. The British made a special jail here known as Cellular Jail for those who fought for the freedom of the country. Prisoners were sent here to languish in it. Chidiya Tapu, Collinpur, Madhuban and Mount Harriet are Southern Paradise. Collinpur has a beautiful sandy beach. Madhuban is a superb trekking area. Introduction

Andaman and Nicobar Islands are an archipelago of 572 emerald islands, islets and rocks. It is stretched over an area of 700 kms from north to south. It has 36 inhabited islands. These islands are covered with dense forests. There is also an endless variety of flowers and birds. The topography is hilly. The beaches are fringed with beautiful coconut palms. The sea around is suitable for water sports. Nature lovers come here searching absolute peace in the lap of nature.

General Information

Andamans and Nicobars are very much isolated from the mainland India. Hence they have retained much of their pristine beauty. They have still not been much polluted by the tourists and other things. Here you find Hindus, Muslims, Christians and Sikhs living in complete peace and harmony.

How to Reach

The best way to reach these islands is to take a flight to Port Blair.
Port Blair can be reached from Kolkata. Delhi and Chennai by air.

By Boat
One can travel over sea to Port Blair from Kolkata. Chennai and Vishakhapatnam. In total, there are usually 4 to 6 sailings a month between Port Blair and the Indian mainland—once every two weeks to/from Kolkata (56 hours) and weekly (in high season) to/from Chennai (60 hours) on four vessels. These are operated by SCI. The service from Chennai goes via Cape Nicobar once a month, taking an extra two days. But only residents may disembark on it. There is usually a service once a month from Vishakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh.

Accommodation

Accommodation is no problem at these islands. There is a 5-star hotel with 45 rooms accommodating 90 beds at Marine hill, Port Blair. There are two 3-star and one 1-star hotel also. There are many other premium hotels which are not starred.

Apart from these luxury hotels, there are budget hotels, lodges, resorts besides Government and Municipal Council accommodation. Every tourist can choose according to his own choice. Just to have an idea, the accommodation is available from Rs. 15/- for a double bedroom (Municipal Dharamshala, Aberdeen bazar to Rs. 3299/- in the 5-star hotel at Marine hill, Port Blair.

Intercity Travels

Inter island boat services : Directorate of Shipping Services operates inter island passenger-cum-cargo for ferries from Phoenix Bay Jetty/Chatham Jetty, Port Blair to :

  1. Bamboo Flat (for Mount Harriet), Havelock Island, Neil Island, Rangat, Mayabunder and
  2. Diglipur
  3. Little Andaman, Car Nicobar, Chowra, Nancowry, Katchal and Campbell Bay (Great Nicobar).

Local Attractions

Cellular Jail : It has its connection from the First War of Indian Independence in 1857. Many of the defeated heroes were lodged in the jail. There is a Light and Show every evening which brings alive the memory of those days when prisoners were into it. Other tourist places are:

  • Barren Island
  • Havelock Island.

Sightseeing : There is much fauna and flora and other scenic beauty on these islands. The beaches and the sea around are of great attraction because of their natural beauty.

Barren Island : There are some islands which are not permanently habitated. Besides, there is a barren island where nothing grows. This is a great attraction for the tourists.

Havelock Island : This is of great tourist interest.

CUISINE
Sea food is the speciality of these islands. The unpolluted water of Andaman Sea abounds with varieties of fish, crabs, lobsters, prawns etc. Seafood is easily available and deliciously cooked. North Indian, South Indian, vegetarian, continental, Chinese dishes are also available.

Shopping : Most of the shopping is done in Aberdeen Bazar, Port Blair. For every tourist, a visit to these islands will be highly refreshing.

Carefully read the objectives of Ecotourism Society of India. Divide each point amongst the students of the class. Initiate a one minute speech in the class where each pair will make a presentation on the point allotted to them.

Classroom activity. The following short speeches shall greatly help the students in doing this activity :

1. We have to make a strategy for the long-term sustenance of the plan. For this work has to be done at all levels, we have to purify air, water and earth. The task is hard but not impossible. To purify our water, the industrial waste water must be treated and purified before throwing it into rivers or oceans. The same thing is to be done about air. Earth can be purified by discontinuing the use of chemical fertilizers. In their place the newly developed organic fertilizers should be used.

2. In order to boost tourism we have to work with many government and private bodies. For example the people of the tourist industry have to understand how to deal politely with the tourists. A tourist is a man on a foreign land. Thus he is like a fish out of water. He needs some support and confidence. Our good behaviour will give him that. We have to contact with the hotel owners to see their capacity. A tourist needs a proper place to live. To attract the tourists we have to be careful about the conservation of nature and wildlife. Many tourists come only for these two things. They are not interested in buildings and structures.

3. The number of tourists is to be increased but regulated and properly directed. It means that we need to have many places of tourist attraction. Let us try to promote them all. If tourists are guided only to a few selected places and they are served with great love and respect, this will be good neither for the tourists nor for tourism industry. In that case these selected places will lose their uniqueness and possibly be polluted. The other places will find it difficult to survive for want of financial resources.

4. To boost terrorism is a good ideal. However, while doing so we should not forget our aim. The aim is to benefit the country and spreading the awareness about our culture. An additional purpose is to help keep our old heritage. So we have to maintain only sustainable tourism. For this enlightened people should work with government bodies. Together they should develop policies and code of conduct to promote sustainable tourism. Otherwise, the unrestricted tourism in the country will defeat its own purpose. That is to say the tourism can pollute and destroy the tourist spots. It can destroy the culture of the host country.

5. People should also work with government bodies to motivate the people engaged in tourism industry. It can be done in various ways. One simple way is to reward a good performance. To do so the government can give certificates of merit for the quality work. A committee of people comprising government officials and renowned people from the public can be constituted. This committee can evaluate the work and then give certificates to those who have excelled in providing services to the foreign tourists.

6. The public can work as watch dog for excessive consumption of natural resources. For example there are in every city many tube-wells which draw illegal water from the earth. The trees are cut to create space for the infrastructure to facilitate tourism. Moreover, some tourists cause havoc to tourism. They pollute our air and water and damage our culture with their indecent behaviours.

Students are advised to prepare more speeches expanding following points yourself.

7. A great service to tourism can be for research and finding out new spots which can be of tourist interest.

8. The Ecotourism Society can work with service providers.

9. Ecotourism Society can stage programmes to encourage use of local practices.

10. The management of waste is one of the biggest modern day problems.

11. Ecotourism society can encourage people to adopt low pollution generating practices.

In order to make the students aware of the need to be responsible ‘eco-tourists’ and to brief them about what they should and should not do in this long tour, a meeting has been arranged. Taking help from the objectives of eco tourism and your own research, prepare the presentation. It can be a power-point presentation or a speech supported by charts and visuals. It’s a great pleasure to know that our school is organizing a long tour for us to Kolkata, Guwahati, Shillong and Gangtok. I intend to give you an idea of the places that we must go to and the way we are expected to conduct ourselves. This is important because our visit will include heritage sites, places of worship, monuments and places of ecological importance such as mountain-sides and rivers. I propose to briefly put before you the special places we are likely to see.

1. Kolkata : Kolkata has beautiful beaches. We must visit them. Our second destination in Kolkata will be Shibpur. Here you will find the botanical gardens on the bank of the river Hooghly. They are famous for a 250 year old banyan tree, nearly largest of its kind in the world. The gardens are over two centuries old and home to over 35000 fruit trees and flowering plants. These have also a rare collection of orchids, besides the coveted books on Botany.

For a wildlife enthusiast, the Doars are a ‘must see’. Then there is Sunderban which is a world heritage site and it is not to be missed. Apart from these Jaldaparee is also worth visiting.

2. Guwahati : Guwahati has a wonderful planetarium which we must visit. Hajo, Kamdev and Sualkuchi are the other places which we must visit when we go to Guwahati. Hajo is a temple town. The most famous temple there is Hayagriva-Madhav temple where Hindus as well as Buddhists offer prayers.

Madan Kamdev is 35 km from Guwahati. It is famous for its archaeological ruins and stone sculptures. Located in picturesque surroundings, this is a historical spot.

Sulakuchi : is located 32 km. from Guwahati. It is on the northern bank of the river Brahmputra. It is a renowned silk-weaving centre. It is called the Manchester of the East. It is the only place where Muga silk is produced.

3. Shillong : It is the picturesque district headquarter of the East Khasi hills. It is also one of the most popular hill stations of the north east. Shillong has many famous falls. Of these the most famous is Swat Falls. Shillong Peak is a spot which no tourist would like to miss. Apart from the Falls, Ward’s Lake is another attraction.

4. Gangtok : By the time we reach Gangtok, we are likely to be tired. Yet there are at least ten spots which I think we must visit. These are :

  1. Tsomgo Lake: On the old trading route from India to China, it is 35 km from Gangtok, Here you will see an ancient Shiva temple also.
  2. Do-Drul Chorten Stupa : This is the most important Stupa of Sikkim.
  3. Enchy Monastry : Located on a hill-top, it is an important seat of Nyingama order. The name ‘Ency Monastry’ means a solitary temple.
  4. Namgyal Institute of Tibetology : This is the highest seat of learning of Mahayana scholars of Tibet.
  5. Tashi viewpoint
  6. Fambong La Wildlife sanctuary : Twenty km from Gangtok, it has a great variety of flora and fauna. Here we can see rare Red Panda, Civet cat etc.
  7. Phensony Monastry.
  8. Kabi Langchok : Situated 17 km from Gangtok, Kabi Langchok is a place of great historical importance.

SUMMARY

‘Atithi Devo Bhavah’ is the essence of an old saying: ‘Treat others as you would like to be treated yourself. It implies that we shall be treated well by others if we treat them well. So we must behave better with others. It is the essence of Atithi Devo Bhauah (Guest is God). The number of foreign tourists in Intha is very small compared to those of ot her Asian countries. We can easily increase this number to 100%. This will only be a first step because the possibilities are much greater. For all this we need to change our attitude and behaviour towards the tourists. It is known that if some one is rude to you, you won’t encourage your friends to visit him.

Respect has always been an integral part of the Indian soul. We have always respected our teachers, elders, parents and guests. In the past, India was visited by travellers for enlightenment. We can bring back this golden age again through our culture of‘our visitor is God’.

The seven-point programme

To attract and assure the tourists the Government of India has launched a programme. This seven-point programme is named Atithi Devo Bhavah.

The first point is to make the people of tourism industry sensitive to the tourists. They should be told how this will benefit them also. For this these people will be given proper training and induction course. This will be the second step. The third step is to motivate these people by various incentives. Certification to ensure standards is the fourth step.

The other three steps are connected with these four. The fifth is to get a feedback from the tourists. This will help in further improvement in the tourism industry. The sixth step is to create awareness among the masses through mass media. The last is to urge all the people connected with tourism to make it their own programme.

The Charter of the Programme

The charter is also of seven points. First of them is hygiene and cleanliness. This includes not only roads and hotels but also vehicles and shops. The service providing persons should also be neat and clean.

The personal conduct and behaviour of the service provider is important. They must be courteous and polite. These people such as taxi drivers and hotel owners must be honest. Safety and security of the tourists is of utmost importance. They should display honesty and integrity.

To do these things, the government is organizing public-relation shows and using mass-media communication to create a general awareness. It is through newspapers, TV, cinema etc.

Taxi drivers and such other people often cheat these tourists. The public should keep an eye on these things. The police should assure speedy action on the culprits. Common men are not always very kind to the tourists, particularly if they are from an undeveloped country. We should remember that a guest is a guest whatever the colour, creed or nationality. Our behaviour should be polite to everyone but specially to a foreign tourist. The way we treat with such a tourist with enhances or lowers the great name of our country abroad.

2. The Two Sides of Tourism Industry

Tourism, specially cultural tourism has two sides. First let us be clear what it means. It means coming in contact of people whose culture is different from your own. Obviously, the people who come as tourists do not want to experience much inconvenience. So for, the host country it means an investment and a commitment. This country has to invest in improving the infrastructure and maintaining its heritage. Thus valuable national resources are spent in becoming good hosts.

But it can also be a powerful economic development tool. Countries like Malaysia have survived basically on tourism. Tourism creates millions of jobs, provides new business opportunities and strengthens the local economy. If properly used, it can help to protect nation’s natural and cultural treasures. It can help also to improve the quality of life for residents and visitors alike.

However, the destruction of local culture as a result of tourism is well-documented. To attract more and more tourists, some governments and organizations offer the visitors stage culture instead of the real street culture. Thus the visitors have a lop-sided view of the country’s culture. In a multi-ethnic society like that of India, it causes a lot of heart-burning in those groups which are ignored. For example, in India the government advertises to the tourists much about the Mughal monuments. This clearly irritates other people whose ancestors’ monuments are equally important. Last but not least, * the chain of visitors causes damage to the heritage cities. So the basic purpose of cultural tourism is itself defeated.

Ram Sethu

  • Space images taken by NASA reveal a mysterious ancient bridge in the Palk Strait between India and Sri Lanka. The recently discovered bridge currently named as Adam’s Bridge is made of chain of shoals, c. 18 mi (30 km) long.

Historical Significance :

  • The bridge’s unique curvature and composition by age reveals that it is man-made. The legends as well as Archaeological studies reveal that the first signs of human inhabitants in Sri Lanka date back to the primitive age, about 1,750,000 years ago and the bridge’s age is also almost equivalent.

Sri Rama and history of Ram Sethu

  • Sri Ram was born three yugas ago as per Hindu religious books, so there could be places of the era of Sri Ram. The fact that there was a monument built during the era of Sri Ram was very heartening and encouraging.

Contemporary Researches :

  • Geological Survey of India (GSI) has sent a team of scientists to Rameswaram to confirm the authenticity of the picture of RAM SETHU taken by NASA.
  • The GSI team, having reached Rameswaram, Dhanushkodi and studying the place shown in the picture, confirmed the underwater formation of rocks attached to each other and described those rocks as old as one lakh years. For further study and excavation, they proposed a detailed project involving marine and scientific assistance and a budget of ₹ 100 crore.

Threatening Factors and Efforts to protect the Ram Sethu

  • The news that Sethusamundram Project will be implemented by destroying Ram Sethu is like a severe jolt to us all.
  • People and many NGO’s are launching movements against the Sethusamudram Project all over India.
