<strong>(ii) </strong>\(-\frac { 13 }{ 17 } \times \frac { -2 }{ 7 } =\frac { -2 }{ 7 } \times \frac { -13 }{ 17 } \)<br />
<strong>(iii) </strong>\(\frac { -19 }{ 29 } \times \frac { 29 }{ -19 } =1\)<br />
<span style="color: #008000;"><strong>Solution.</strong></span><br />
<strong>(i)</strong> 1 is the multiplicative identity<br />
<strong>(ii)</strong> Commutativity of multiplication<br />
<strong>(iii)</strong> Multiplicative inverse.</p>
<p><span style="color: #eb4924;"><strong>Question 6.</strong></span><br />
Multiply \(\frac { 6 }{ 13 } \) by the reciprocal of \(\frac { -7 }{ 16 } \)<br />
<span style="color: #008000;"><strong>Solution.</strong></span><br />
Reciprocal of \(\frac { -7 }{ 16 } \) is \(\frac { -16 }{ 7 } \)<br />
Now,<br />
\(\frac { 6 }{ 13 } \times \frac { -16 }{ 7 } =\frac { 6\times \left( -16 \right) }{ 13\times 7 } =\frac { -96 }{ 91 } \)</p>
<p><span style="color: #eb4924;"><strong>Question 7.</strong></span><br />
Tell what property allows you to compute : \(\frac { 1 }{ 3 } \times \left( 6\times \frac { 4 }{ 3 } \right) \) as \(\left( \frac { 1 }{ 3 } \times 6 \right) \times \frac { 4 }{ 3 } \)<br />
<span style="color: #008000;"><strong>Solution.</strong></span><br />
Associativity.</p>
<p><span style="color: #eb4924;"><strong>Question 8.</strong></span><br />
Is the \(\frac { 8 }{ 9 } \) multiplicative inverse of \(-1\frac { 1 }{ 8 } \) ? Why or why not?<br />
<span style="color: #008000;"><strong>Solution.</strong></span><br />
\(-1\frac { 1 }{ 8 } =-\frac { 9 }{ 8 } \)<br />
Now, \(\frac { 8 }{ 9 } \times \frac { -9 }{ 8 } =-1\neq 1\)<br />
So, No ; \(\frac { 8 }{ 9 } \) is not the multiplicative inverse of \(-1\frac { 1 }{ 8 } \left( =-\frac { 9 }{ 8 } \right) \) because the product of \(\frac { 8 }{ 9 } \) and -13(-) and \(-1\frac { 1 }{ 8 } \left( =-\frac { 9 }{ 8 } \right) \) is not 1.</p>
<p><span style="color: #eb4924;"><strong>Question 9.</strong></span><br />
Is 0.3 the multiplicative inverse of \(3\frac { 1 }{ 3 }\) ? Why or why not?<br />
<span style="color: #008000;"><strong>Solution.</strong></span><br />
Yes ; 0.3 is the multiplicative inverse of \(\frac { 10 }{ 3 } \) because<br />
\(\frac { 3 }{ 10 } \times \frac { 10 }{ 3 } =\frac { 3\times 10 }{ 10\times 3 } =\frac { 30 }{ 30 } =1\)</p>
<p><span style="color: #eb4924;"><strong>Question 10.</strong></span><br />
Write :<br />
<strong>(i)</strong> The rational number that does not have a reciprocal.<br />
<strong>(ii)</strong> The rational numbers that are equal to their reciprocals.<br />
<strong>(iii)</strong> The rational number that is equal to its negative.<br />
<span style="color: #008000;"><strong>Solution.</strong></span><br />

<strong>(ii)</strong> The rational numbers 1 and (-1) are equal to their own reciprocals.<br />
<strong>(iii)</strong> The rational number 0 is equal to its negative.</p>
<p><span style="color: #eb4924;"><strong>Question 11.</strong></span><br />
<strong>Fill in the blanks :</strong><br />
<strong>(i)</strong> Zero has<strong>&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.</strong>reciprocal.<br />
<strong>(ii)</strong> The numbers<strong>&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.</strong>and<strong>&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;</strong>are their own reciprocals.<br />
<strong>(iii)</strong> The reciprocal of &#8211; 5 is.<strong>&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.</strong><br />

<h2>NCERT Solutions for Class 8 Maths Chapter 16 Playing with Numbers Ex 16.2</h2>
<p><strong><span style="color: #eb4924;">Question 1.</span></strong><br />
If 21y5 is a multiple of 9, where y is a digit, what is the value of y?<br />
<span style="color: #008000;"><strong>Solution.</strong></span><br />
Since 21y5 is a multiple of 9, its sum of digits 2 + 1+ y + 5 = 8+ y isa multiple of 9; so 8 + y is one of these numbers: 0, 9, 18, 27, 36, 45,&#8230; .<br />
But since y is a digit, it can only be possible that 8 + y = 9. Therefore, y = 1.</p>
<p><strong><span style="color: #eb4924;">Question 2.</span></strong><br />
If 31z5 is a multiple of 9, where z is a digit, what is the value of z?<br />
You will find that there are two answers to the last problem. Why is this so?<br />
<span style="color: #008000;"><strong>Solution.</strong></span><br />
Since 31z5 is a multiple of 9, its sum of digits 3 + 1 + z + 5 = 9 + z isa multiple of 9; so 9 + z is one of these numbers: 0, 9, 18, 27, 36, 45, &#8230; .<br />
But since z is a digit, it can only be possible that 9 + z = 9 or 18. Therefore, z = 0 or 9.</p>
<p><strong><span style="color: #eb4924;">Question 3.</span></strong><br />
If 24x is a multiple of 3, where x is a digit, what is the value of x?<br />
(Since 24x is a multiple of 3, its sum of digits 6 + x is a multiple of 3; so 6 + x is one of these numbers: 0, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, &#8230; .<br />
But since xis a digit, it can only be that 6 + x = 6 or 9 or 12 or 15. Therefore, x = 0 or 3 or 6 or 9. Thus, x can have any of four different values.)<br />
<span style="color: #008000;"><strong>Solution.</strong></span><br />
The solution is given with question.</p>
<p><strong><span style="color: #eb4924;">Question 4.</span></strong><br />
If 31z5 is a multiple of 3, where z is a digit, what might be the values of z?<br />
<span style="color: #008000;"><strong>Solution.</strong></span><br />
Since 31z5 is a multiple of 3, its sum of digits 3 + 1 + z + 5 = 9 + z is a multiple of 3; so 9 + z is one of these numbers: 0, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, &#8230; .<br />
But since z is a digit, it can only be possible that 9 + z = 9 or 12 or 15 or 18. Therefore, z = 0 or 3 or 6 or 9.</p>

<p><span style="color: #eb4924;"><strong>Question 9.</strong></span><br />
A car takes 2 hours to reach a destination by traveling at a speed of 60 km/h. How long will it take when the car travels at the speed of 80 km/h?<br />
<span style="color: #008000;"><strong>Solution.</strong></span><br />
Let it take \({ y }_{ 2 }\) hours. We have the following table:<br />
sol.<br />
<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-47320" src="https://mcqquestions.guru/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/NCERT-Solutions-for-Class-8-Maths-Chapter-13-Direct-and-Indirect-Proportions-Ex-13.2-15.png" alt="NCERT Solutions for Class 8 Maths Chapter 13 Direct and Indirect Proportions Ex 13.2 15" width="366" height="334" srcset="https://mcqquestions.guru/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/NCERT-Solutions-for-Class-8-Maths-Chapter-13-Direct-and-Indirect-Proportions-Ex-13.2-15.png 366w, https://mcqquestions.guru/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/NCERT-Solutions-for-Class-8-Maths-Chapter-13-Direct-and-Indirect-Proportions-Ex-13.2-15-300x274.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 366px) 100vw, 366px" /></p>
<p><span style="color: #eb4924;"><strong>Question 10.</strong></span><br />
Two persons could fit new windows in a house in 3 days.<br />
<strong>(i)</strong> One of the persons fell ill before the work started. How long would the job take now?<br />
<strong>(ii)</strong> How many persons would be needed to fit the windows in one day?<br />
<span style="color: #008000;"><strong>Solution.</strong></span><br />
<strong>(i)</strong> Let the job would take \({ y }_{ 2 }\) days. We have the following table:<br />
<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-47321" src="https://mcqquestions.guru/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/NCERT-Solutions-for-Class-8-Maths-Chapter-13-Direct-and-Indirect-Proportions-Ex-13.2-16.png" alt="NCERT Solutions for Class 8 Maths Chapter 13 Direct and Indirect Proportions Ex 13.2 16" width="364" height="86" srcset="https://mcqquestions.guru/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/NCERT-Solutions-for-Class-8-Maths-Chapter-13-Direct-and-Indirect-Proportions-Ex-13.2-16.png 364w, https://mcqquestions.guru/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/NCERT-Solutions-for-Class-8-Maths-Chapter-13-Direct-and-Indirect-Proportions-Ex-13.2-16-300x71.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 364px) 100vw, 364px" /><br />
Clearly, more the number of persons, lesser would be the number of days to do the job. So, the number of persons and number of days vary in inverse proportion.<br />
So, 2 x 3 = 1 x \({ y }_{ 2 }\)<br />
⇒ \({ y }_{ 2 }\) = 6<br />
Thus, the job would now take 6 days.</p>
<p><strong>(ii)</strong> Let \({ y }_{ 2 }\) persons be needed. We have the following table:<br />
<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-47322" src="https://mcqquestions.guru/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/NCERT-Solutions-for-Class-8-Maths-Chapter-13-Direct-and-Indirect-Proportions-Ex-13.2-17.png" alt="NCERT Solutions for Class 8 Maths Chapter 13 Direct and Indirect Proportions Ex 13.2 17" width="379" height="92" srcset="https://mcqquestions.guru/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/NCERT-Solutions-for-Class-8-Maths-Chapter-13-Direct-and-Indirect-Proportions-Ex-13.2-17.png 379w, https://mcqquestions.guru/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/NCERT-Solutions-for-Class-8-Maths-Chapter-13-Direct-and-Indirect-Proportions-Ex-13.2-17-300x73.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 379px) 100vw, 379px" /><br />
Clearly, more the number of persons, lesser would be the number of days to do the job. So, the number of persons and number of days vary in inverse proportion.<br />
So, 3 x 2 = 1 x \({ y }_{ 3 }\)<br />
⇒ \({ T }_{ 2 }\) = 6<br />
Thus, 6 persons would be needed.</p>
<p><span style="color: #eb4924;"><strong>Question 11.</strong></span><br />
A school has 8periods a day each of 45 minutes duration. How long would each period be, if the school has 9 periods a day, assuming the number of school hours to be the same?<br />
<span style="color: #008000;"><strong>Solution.</strong></span><br />
Let each period be \({ y }_{ 2 }\) minutes long.<br />
We have the following table:<br />
<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-47323" src="https://mcqquestions.guru/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/NCERT-Solutions-for-Class-8-Maths-Chapter-13-Direct-and-Indirect-Proportions-Ex-13.2-18.png" alt="NCERT Solutions for Class 8 Maths Chapter 13 Direct and Indirect Proportions Ex 13.2 18" width="372" height="114" srcset="https://mcqquestions.guru/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/NCERT-Solutions-for-Class-8-Maths-Chapter-13-Direct-and-Indirect-Proportions-Ex-13.2-18.png 372w, https://mcqquestions.guru/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/NCERT-Solutions-for-Class-8-Maths-Chapter-13-Direct-and-Indirect-Proportions-Ex-13.2-18-300x92.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 372px) 100vw, 372px" /><br />
We note that more the number of periods, lesser would be the length of each period. Therefore, this is a case of inverse proportion.<br />
So, 8 x 45 = 9 x \({ y }_{ 2 }\)<br />
⇒ \({ y }_{ 2 }=\frac { 8\times 45 }{ 9 } \)<br />
⇒ \({ y }_{ 2 }\) = 40<br />
Hence, each period would be 40 minutes long.</p>

<p><span style="color: #eb4924;"><strong>Question 4.</strong></span><br />
In a stack there are 5 books each of thickness 20 mm and 5 paper sheets each of thickness 0.016 mm. What is the total thickness of the stack ?<br />
<span style="color: #008000;"><strong>Solution.</strong></span><br />
Total thickness of books<br />
= 5 x 20 mm = 100 mm<br />
Total thickness of paper sheets<br />
= 5 x 0.016 mm = 0.080 mm<br />
∴ Total thickness of the stack<br />
= Total thickness of books + Total thickness of paper sheets<br />
= 100 mm + 0.080 mm<br />
= (100 + 0.080) mm<br />
= 100.080 mm<br />
= 1.0008 x \({ 10 }^{ 2 }\) mm.</p>
