The narrator, Framton Nuttel had some nervous disorder. He needed complete rest and no mental excitement. He was advised to settle in the country for cure. When he was peparing to migrate to the country his sister gave him a few letters of introduction to all the people. She knew these. One was addressed to Mrs. Sappleton.

Framton called her house. He knew nobody else there. Mrs. Sappleton was upstairs. Her niece Vera received the stranger. He didn’t know whether Mrs. Sappleton was married or widowed. So the young girl, Vera decided to have some fun. She told him that the great mishap occurred some three years ago. She said that her aunt’s husband with her two young brothers and a dog had gone out for day’s shooting through the window. While crossing the grassland they sank into wet marshy ground. They never returned. Even their dead bodies could not be recovered.

Vera continued with her cooked up story. She said that poor aunt always kept the window open every evening. She thought that the hunting party would come back someday and enter through that window. Her husband carried a white waterproof coat while her youngest brother was in the habit of teasing her by singing “Bertie, why do you bound?’ Framton got frightened.

It was a relief to him when the aunt walked into the room. She hoped that the girl must have been amusing him. She added that the aunt was waiting for her husband and her two brothers to come home anytime. They would enter through the window and spoil her carpets with their muddy boots.

Framton made an effort to turn the talk to some other topic. So he started telling about his ailments. But the aunt’s eyes were constantly turning to the open window and the lawn. She looked feeling bored with his details of illness.

Suddenly she saw the party returning home just in time for tea. Framton also saw through the open window with horror. Three figures were walking towards the window. They all carried guns. One of them recited the song, saying, Bertie, why do you bound?

Framton took them all for ghosts. He collected his hat and stick. He ran out madly. He forced a cyclist run into a hedge.

Vera’s uncle enquired about the stranger. The aunt described him as an extraordinary man Mr. Nuttel, who could only talk about his illneses. Nuttel had perhaps, seen a ghost. But Vera said calmly that the stranger had a horror of dogs. Once the poor fellow had to spend the night in a grave with dogs growling above him.

Vera was good at finding occasions for fun.

फ्रेमटन मिसेज सेपिल्टन के घर पहुंचा। वह उस गाँव के किसी भी अन्य व्यक्ति को नहीं जानता था। मिसेज सेपिल्टन ऊपर की मंजिल में थी। उनकी भतीजी वेरा ने उनका स्वागत किया। फ्रेमटन को यह भी पता न था कि महिला सधवा है या विधवा। वेरा ने कुछ मजा लेने का विचार किया। उसने उन्हें एक विपदा के बारे में बताया जो तीन वर्ष पूर्व घटी थी। उसकी चाची के पति तथा उसके दो छोटे भाई एक कुत्ता साथ लिये पक्षी शिकार को खिड़की से बाहर निकले थे। घास के मैदान को पार करते समय वे एक गीले दलदल में फँस गये। वे कभी वापिस नहीं लौटे। उनके शव भी नहीं पाये गये।

वेरा ने अपनी काल्पनिक कहानी सुनाना जारी रखी। वह बोली कि बेचारी आंट अब हर शाम खिड़की खुली रखती है। वह सोचती है कि शिकारी दल किसी दिन लौटकर आ जायेंगे और इस खुली खिड़की से प्रवेश करेंगें। उसके पति के हाथ में एक सफेद बरसाती कोट था जब, कि चाची के सबसे छोटे भाई की आदत थी कि गाने की एक पंक्ति गाकर वह बहन को चिढ़ाता रहता था।-बर्टी तुम भागती क्यों हो? फ्रेमटन को कैंपकपी हो गयी।

उसे राहत मिली जब चाची ने कमरे में प्रवेश किया। उन्होंने आशा व्यक्त की कि लड़की वेरा उनका मनोरजन अवश्य कर रही होगी। चाची बोली वह तो अपने पति तथा दोनो भाइयों के घर लौटने की प्रतीक्षा कर रही है। वे खिड़की से ही प्रवेश करेंगे तथा उसके गलीचे को कीचड़ सने जूतों से गंदा कर देंगे।

फ्रेमटन ने बातचीत का विषय बदलने का प्रयास किया। इसलिये उसने अपनी बीमारी का विवरण देना शुरु कर दिया। पर चाची की दृष्टि निरन्तर खुली खिड़की तथा लॉन की ओर बनी रहती थी। वह फ्रेमटन की बीमारी का विवरण सुनकर ऊब रही थी।

अचानक चाची ने दल को चाय के लिए ठीक समय घर लौटते देखा। फ्रेमटन ने भी खुली खिड़की से बाहर भयभीत दृष्टि से देखा। तीन व्यक्ति खिड़की की ओर आ रहे थे। सबके हाथों में बन्दूकें थी। एक बर्टी वाला गाना भी गा रहा था।

फ्रेमटन को लगा ये तो भूत हैं। उसने अपना हैट तथा छड़ी उठाई। वह बाहर की ओर भाग चला। उसने एक साइकिल चालक को भी डरा दिया जो बाड़ में जा टकराया।

वेरा के अंकल ने उस अजनबी के बारे में पूछताछ की। अंटी से बताया अजीब आदमी था मि० नटेल जो केवल अपनी बीमारी की ही बात करता था। नटेल ने शायद कोई भूत देख लिया था पर वेरा शांत स्वर में बोली कि अजनबी को वास्तव में कुत्ते से डर था। एक बार बेचारे को एक कब्र के अन्दर रात बितानी पड़ी थी और कब्र के ऊपर कुत्ते गुर्राते रहे थे।

वेरा को महारत हासिल थी कि वह मजाक का अवसर पैदा कर लेती थी।

Ranji had been in Rajpur when he discovered a pool in the forest. It was a hot day. He plunged into it for a swim. He had no friends. So he wandered about a good deal alone. A small stream flowed out from rocks to feed the pool. Ranji’s limbs were supple and free of fat.

The next day he came again to the forest pool. While he lay there he noticed another boy looking at him in a hostile manner. The other boy was Suraj, older, taller and stronger than Ranji. He said that it was his pool and he always swam alone. He called himself a warrior. Ranji was unafraid. He said that he was not a villager, but a fighter. He refused to run away. He threw a challenge to his adversary. The warrior slapped Ranji with force. Ranji also hit back with his bony fist into the other’s face.

The two started grappling. It was a violent struggle. The fight continued even in the water. Neither emerged victorious. The warrior deferred the fight for the next day. Ranji promised to come, prepared for the fight. He had got cuts on his face, legs and arms.

That evening he went to the bazaar, ate jalebis and drank lemonade. He saw his adversary coming down the road. Both looked angrily at each other. He was feeling weak and lazy after the previous day’s fight. But he could not back out of the challenge. He knew he was no match to him, but he refused to accept defeat. He thought that as long as he fought, he had the right to the pool in the forest.

The next day the two stood on either bank of the stream. Ranji challenged him to swim and come to his side. He was superior to Suraj in swimming. He could dive easily. Ranji could swim under water*. He guided Suraj how to. dive and swim under water. Thus he tought his opponent Ranji acknowledged that Suraj was a wrestler. Suraj promised to make bony Ranji a pahalwan. The two became friends now. In that moment were born love and understanding between them. They owned the pool jointly thereafter.

दोनों गुत्थम-गुत्था हो गये। जोर-शोर से लड़ाई हुई। पानी में भी लड़ाई चलती रही। दोनों में कोई भी विजयी नहीं हो पाया। सूरज ने लड़ाई अगले दिन तक के लिये टाल दी। रनजी ने वचन दिया कि मैं लड़ने को तैयार होकर कल आ जाऊँगा। उसके चेहरे, पैरों तथा बाजुओं में घाव हो गये थे।

उस शाम वह बाजार गया, वहाँ जलेबी खाई तथा लेमन सोडा पीया। तभी उसे अपना प्रतिद्वन्द्वी दिखाई दिया जो सड़क पर उसकी ओर आ रहा था। दोनों ने एक दूसरे को क्रोध पूर्वक देखा। रनजी कमजोर और सुस्त महसूस कर रहा था, क्योंकि यह पिछले दिन की गुत्थम गुत्थी का परिणाम था। पर वह चुनौती से पीछे हटने वाला न था। वह जानता था कि वह सूरज से कमजोर है, पर उसने पराजय स्वीकार नहीं की। उसने सोचा जब तक वह लड़ता रहेगा उसका जंगल के ताल पर अधिकार बना रहेगा।

अगले दिन दोनों नदी के दो किनारों पर खड़े थे। रनजी ने उसे ललकारा कि तैर कर इधर आ जाओ। वह तैराकी में सूरज से बेहतर था। वह सरलतापूर्वक गोता लगा सकता था। उसने सूरज को गोता मारने तथा पानी में नीचे तैरने का तरीका बताया। रनजी ने माना कि सूरज पहलवान है। सूरज ने वचन दिया कि वह भी उस कमजोर हडिडयों वाले को पहलवान बना देगा। तब दोनों मित्र बन गये। इस क्षण उनके बीच प्यार तथा समझौते का जन्म हो गया। अब ताल पर दोनों का मालिकाना हक बन गया।

The King and Queen of Siam had many daughters. In order to avoid confusion, the King called the princesses by the name of the months like January, February, March etc. The last daughter was named September.

The King of Siam had a peculiar habit. Instead of accepting birthday gifts, he used to give everyone gifts. One year on his birthday, he gave each one of the princesses a green parrot in a golden cage. The princesses taught the bird to say; “God save the king; some of the parrots would say, “Pretty polly’ in seven oriental languages.

One day Princess September found her parrot lying dead. She burst into tears. The Queen called her crying nonsense and put her to bed without any supper. Princess September was woken up by the song of a little bird. He (bird) flew into her room and sang beautifully. Princess September forgot crying. She agreed to have it in place of her dead parrot.

When the princess awoke the next day, the little song bird was still there and he said ‘Good morning!’ He ate rice out of her hand. Everybody was surprised to see that. Princess September decided to show her bird to her eight sisters. For each of them the bird sang a different song. The parrots could only say “God Save the King’. The King and the queen were also surprised and delighted to hear the bird’s song.

All the eight princesses were worried now. The parrots also looked sad. Only Princess September ran in the palace singing like a lark.

The jealous sisters took a nasty decision. They pointed out to their youngest sister that she should put her bird into a cage lest he should fly away for good.

The little bird came late that evening. September’s worry was about his safety from hawks and the hunter’s traps. So as he came, she pushed him into a cage and shut the door. The bird was taken aback. He hoped that he would be set free in the morning. But he cried in vain for liberty. As a result, he lost his singing talent. He refused to eat anything.

The next day September found the bird lying with his eyes closed. He looked as if he were dead. Seeing his condition, she agreed to let him leave the golden cage. And the bird promised to return to her every day and sing to her. Her sisters made fun of her. They said he would never return. But he did, at last. And he sat on September’s shoulder and ate out of his hand and sang her the beautiful songs he had learned.

September kept her window open all day and night for the bird to fly in and out. Fresh air from the open window made the princess extremely beautiful. She was married to the king of Cambodia. But her sisters who kept the windows shut, grew ugly as well as unpleasant. So they were married away with the King’s ministers.

एक दिन राजकुमारी सितम्बर ने अपने तोते को मृत पाया। वह रो पड़ी। रानी ने उसे उसकी मूर्खता कहा तथा उसे भूखा ही सुला दिया। सितम्बर एक छोटे पक्षी के गाने के कारण जग गई। उसने एक छोटे गायक पक्षी को कमरे में प्रवेश करते देखा तथा उसका गाना सुना। वह रोना भूल गई। वह उसे अपने मृत तोते के स्थान पर रखने को सहमत हो गई।

जब वह अगली प्रातः जगी तो पक्षी को कमरे में ही पाया और पक्षी ने ‘सुप्रभात’ कहकर उसका अभिवादन किया। उसने उसके हाथ से चावल खाया। हर कोई यह देखकर दंग रह गया। सितम्बर ने सोचा कि अपने पक्षी को वह अपनी आठ बहनों को भी दिखाये। उनमें से प्रत्येक के लिये पक्षी ने एक नया गाना गाया। तोते तो केवल ‘परमात्मा! राजा की रक्षा करें ही कह पाते थे। पक्षी का गीत सुनकर राजा तथा रानी आश्चर्यचकित तथा आनन्दित हुए।

राजा तथा रानी का मन उन तोतों का गायन (सुन्दर पोली शब्द) सुनकर ऊब गया था।

सभी आठों राजकुमारियाँ अब चिन्तित हो गईं। तोते भी उदास हो गये। केवल राजकुमारी सितम्बर ही महल में लार्क पक्षी की भाँति गाती हुई दौड़ती रही।

ईर्ष्यालु बहनों ने एक गंदा निर्णय लिया। उन्होंने अपनी सबसे छोटी बहन को समझाया कि अपने पक्षी को पिंजरे में बंद करके रखो, कहीं वह सदा के लिये ही चला न जाये।

छोटा पक्षी उस शाम देर से लौटा। सितम्बर को चिन्ता हो गई कि कहीं वह बाज पक्षी का शिकार अथवा शिकारी के जाल में न फंस गया हो। अतएव जैसे ही पक्षी आया, सितम्बर ने उसे पिंजरे में धकेल कर दरवाजा बंद कर दिया। पक्षी हैरान रह गया। उसे आशा बनी रही कि प्रात: उसे मुक्त कर दिया जायेगा। पर वह अपनी आजादी के लिये निष्फल रोता चिल्लाता रहा। परिणामस्वरुप वह अपनी गायन कला भूल गया। उसने भूख हड़ताल भी करें दी।

अगले दिन सितम्बर ने पक्षी की आँखें बंद देखीं तथा उसे लेटे हुए पाया। उसकी हालत देखकर सितम्बर उसे सोने के पिंजरे से मुक्त करने के लिए राजी हो गई। पक्षी ने वचन दिया कि हर दिन वह उसके पास लौटकर आयेगा और गीत गाया करेगा। सितम्बर की बहनें उसका मजाक उडाने लगीं। वे बोलीं कि पक्षी कभी भी लौट कर नहीं आयेगा। पर अंतत: वह लौट आया। वह सितम्बर के कंधे पर बैठा और उसके हाथों से खाना खाया फिर उसके लिए गाना भी गाया।

सितम्बर अपने कमरे की खिड़की रात दिन खोले रखती ताकि पक्षी इच्छानुसार आये जाये। खुली खिड़की से आती ताजी हवा ने राजकुमारी को अति सुन्दर बना दिया। इस कारण उसका विवाह कम्बोडिया के राजा से हो गया। पर उसकी बहनें जो अपनी खिड़कियाँ बंद करके सोती थी कुरुप हो गई तथा बद मिजाज भी। इसीलिए, उनका विवाह राजा के मंत्रीगणों से कर दिया गया।

Every child is capable of doing big things. He can become a hero in the area of his interest. What is needed most is to discover his talent or aptitude. Hafeez is a living example of such a hero.

Hafeez Contractor is today India’s leading architect. But he was unhappy and careless at school. He loved doing things and hated mechanical learning. He used to have terrible dreams about appearing for a maths examination in which he knew nothing at all. When he reached the third standard, he lost interest in studies. He took interest in games and playing practical jokes on others. He passed all the school exams by using unfair means.

But, later, one sentence spoken to him by his Principal changed his life. He was in the 11th standard then. The Principal said that Hafeez was a good student, but had little interest in studies. He (the principal had taken care of him till that day but now he could no longer take care of him He should study hard. Only sports won’t take him far. He took his final examination. He could never get more than second class.

No doubt he was pulled up by his teachers at school. He received a caning every week for not doing homework or for his bad behaviour. Caning did hurt him badly, but he forgot about it soon when h$ was in playground. Every Saturday he went to see a movie. He was the leader of a gang of boys and took part in going fights. He used to open his textbooks only on the day just before exams.

How then he could become an architect? Hafeez told the interviewer that he wanted to join the army or the police force. But his mother told him to do his graduation first. So he joined Jaihind College in Bombay. There he studied French for seven years without learning anything. He later learnt this language from his cousin, an architect’s wife.

It so happened that Hafeez saw somebody drawing a window detail. He told the man that the window won’t open. He had a bet and he won it. His cousin’s husband asked him to design a house and he did it. He then asked Hafeez to join architecture. And Hafeez got first position in the entrance test in that college of architecture. He thinks that all his qualities grew from what he used to play and do during school.

He admitted frankly that he was bad at languages. He was also poor in maths. Gifted boys are said to be poor in learning. Class toppers often do veiy ordinarily later on. He himself could sketch on the spot. He judged the taste of a client from his way of talking and eating. Hafeez always hated maths. But now as an architect he loves that subject.

पर बाद में उसके प्रिंसिपल द्वारा उसको बोले गये एक वाक्य ने उसके जीवन में परिवर्तन ला दिया। वह उस समय 11वीं कक्षा में था! प्राचार्य बोले, हफीज, तुम एक अच्छे बालक हो पर तुम्हारी रुचि पढ़ाई-लिखाई में बिल्कुल नहीं है। केवल खेल कूद के सहारे तुम जीवन में प्रगति नहीं कर पाओग। उसनं वाषक परीक्षा दी। वह कभी भी द्वितीय श्रेणी से ऊँची श्रेणी में उर्तीण नहीं हुआ।

नि:संदेह स्कूली शिक्षक उसके कान खींचा करते थे। उसे हर सप्ताह होमवर्क न करने अथवा कोई शैतानी करने के कारण बेंत खाने पड़ते थे। बेंत उसे काफी चोट तो पहुँचाती थी पर वह इसे शीघ्र ही भुलाकर खेल के मैदान में चला जाता था। हर शनिवार को वह एक फिल्म देखने जाता था। वह बालकों के गिरोह का सरगना भी था तथा झगड़े फसाद करता रहता था। वह अपनी पाठ्य पुस्तकें तो परीक्षा के ठीक एक दिन पूर्व ही खोलता था।

फिर वह इतना बड़ा शिल्पकार किस प्रकार से बन गया? हफीज ने साक्षात्कार करने वाले को बताया कि वह तो सैनिक बनना चाहता था अथवा सिपाही। पर उसकी माँ ने उसे बोला पहले ग्रेजुएट हो जाओ। इस कारण उसने बम्बई के जयहिन्द कॉलेज में प्रवेश ले लिया। वहाँ सात वर्षों तक उसने फ्रेंच भाषा पढ़ी पर वह उसे सीख नहीं पाया। बाद में उसने फ्रेंच भाषा अपनी चचेरी बहन से सीखी जिसका पति एक शिल्पकार था।

संयोग ऐसा हुआ कि हफीज ने किसी को खिड़की का मॉडल (प्रारूप) बनाते देखा। उसने उसे बताया कि तुम्हारी खिड़की तो खुल ही नहीं पायेगी। उसने शर्त लगा ली और जीत गया। उसकी बहन के पति ने उसे एक घर का नक्शा बनाने को कहा और हफीज ने बना दिया। फिर उसने हफीज को बोला कि शिल्प विद्यालय में प्रवेश ले लो। और हफीज ने प्रवेश परीक्षा में सर्वोच्च स्थान पाया। उसे विश्वास है कि उसकी सारी समझ उन खेलों के माध्यम से विकसित हुई जो वह स्कूल के दौरान खेला तथा किया करता था।

हफीज ने स्पष्ट स्वीकार किया कि उसे भाषा सीखना मुश्किल लगता था। वह गणित में भी कमजोर था। प्राकृतिक प्रतिभा सम्पन्न बालक प्रायः पढ़ाई लिखाई में कमजोर होते हैं। कक्षा में प्रथम रहने वाले बालक बड़े होने पर बहुत कम चमक पाते हैं। वह स्वयं हाथ के हाथ नक्शे का रेखाचित्र बना दिया करता था। वह अपने ग्राहक की रुचि का अनुमान उसके बातें करने तथा भोजन करने के तरीके से लगा लेता है। हमेशा ही हफीज को गाणित से घृणा रहती थी! पर आज शिल्पकार के रुप में उसी गणित से उसे प्यार हो गया।

The Giant decided not to allow anybody else to play there. So he built a high boundary wall around it. He also put up a notice that outsiders entering the garden will be punished.

The poor children had no other place to go. They didn’t like to play on the dusty road full of stones.

Then the spring came all over the country. Only in the garden of the selfish Giant it was still winter. No flowers bloomed and no birds sang. The only visitors were the snow and the frost which painted all the trees silver. The north wind roared there all day. It also asked the hailstones to come.

The Giant wondered why the spring passed by his garden. It was always winter there.

One morning he heard some lovely music of a linneta song bird outside his window. He jumped out of bed and looked out. He saw a wonderful sight. The children had crept in through a hole in the wa^l. They were sitting on the branches of trees which gladly welcomed them with flowers. Only in one corner it was still winter. A small boy was wandering all around the tree and crying. He was too small to climb up.

The Giant’s heart melted. He went out in the garden. The children ran away on seeing him. The garden became winter again. But when he put the small boy up into the tree, it broke into flowers. The boy threw his arms round his neck and kissed him. Other children noticed the change in the Giant’s behaviour. So they too came back. The Giant knocked down the wall and started playing with them. He wanted to see the small boy whom he had put up into the tree. But he had gone away.

Years went by and he grew old and weak. He realised that the children were the most beautiful flowers of all.

One winter morning he saw a tree covered with lovely white flowers and silver fruit. Under it stood the little boy. He came running, close to the boy. He noticed two nail wounds each on the boy’s arms and on the little feet. He declared angrily that he would kill cruel man who had injured him. At this the child told him that those were the wounds of Love. It further told that he had come to take him to his garden, which was paradise. In the afternoon the Giant was found lying dead under the tree.

दानव का बगीचा काफी सुन्दर था। बच्चों को वहाँ खेलने में आनन्द आता था। हर शाम जब वे स्कूल से लौटते वे उस विशाल, मोहक बाग में जहाँ फूल तथा फल के वृक्ष थे, प्रवेश कर जाते थे।

पर दानव बहुत स्वार्थी था। एक दिन वह सात वर्षों तक अपने किसी मित्र के पास ठहरने के बाद घर लौटा। उसने बच्चों को बगीचे में खेलते पाया। उसने उन्हें क्रोध पूर्वक डाँटा। बच्चे डटकर भाग गये! दानव ने निर्णय किया कि वह किसी भी अन्य व्यक्ति को अपने बगीचे में खेलने नहीं देगा। इस विचार से उसने बगीचे के चारों ओर एक ऊँची चारदीवारी अमवा दी। उसने एक सूचना पट्टिका भी लटका दी कि कोई भी बाहरी व्यक्ति यदि बगीचे में प्रवेश किया तो उसे दण्डित किया जायेगा।

बेचारे बच्चों के पास खेल का कोई अन्य मैदान न था। वे धूल भरी तथा पशरोली सड़क पर खेलना पसन्द नहीं करते थे।

फिर बसंत ऋतु सारे देश में आ गई। पर स्वार्थी दानव के बगीचे में तब भी शोत ऋतु बनी रहीं। न कोई फूल खिले, न ही कोई पक्षी वहाँ गाता पाया गया। वहाँ आने वाले तो केवल हिम तथा तुषार ही थे जिन्होंने सभी वृक्षों को सफेद रंग से ढंक दिया था। ठण्डी उत्तरी पवन वहाँ सारा दिन दहाड़ने लगी। उसने ओलों को भी आमंत्रित कर लिया।

दानव हैरान था कि बसंत उसके बगीचे के बाहर से ही क्यों गुजर जाता है। वहाँ तो हमेशा शीत ऋतु बनी रहती है।

एक प्रात: उसे एक गायक पक्षी का स्वर खिड़की के बाहर से आता सुनाई दिया। वह बिस्तर से उछल कर खड़ा हो गया तथा बाहर दृष्टि दौड़ाई। उसे एक अद्भुत दृश्य दिखाई दिया। बच्चे बगीचे को चारदीवारी में बने छोटे छेद से अन्दर आ गये थे। वे वृक्षों की शाखाओं पर बैठे थे। वन वृक्षों ने उनका फूलों से अभिवादन किया। केवल एक कोने में अभी भी शीत ऋतु थी। एक छोटा बालक वृक्ष के चारों ओर घूमता हुआ रो रहा था। वह इतना छोटा था कि वृक्ष पर चढ़ नहीं सकता था। वह उस छोटे बालक को देखना चाहता था जिसे उसने वृक्ष की शाखा पर बिठाया था। लेकिन वह छोटा बालक जा चुका था।

दानव का दिल द्रवित हो गया। वह बगीचे में गया। बच्चे उसे देखते ही भाग गये। बगीच में गुन: बर्फ फैल गई। पर जब दानव ने छोटे बालक को वृक्ष की एक शाखा पर बिठाया, तो वृक्ष फूलों से लद गया। बालक ने दानव के गले में बांह डाल दो तथा उसे प्यार किया। अन्य बच्चों ने दानव के व्यवहार में आये परिवर्तन को देखा! इस कारण वे भी वापिस आ गये। दानव ने चारदीवारी तोड़ दी तथा बच्चों वं साथ खेलने लगा। वह उस छोटे बालक को देखना चाहता था जिसे वृक्ष की शाखा पर बिठाया था। लेकिन वह छोटा बालक जा : का था।

अनेक वर्ष बीत गये और वह कमजोर और बूढ़ा हो गया। उसे लगा कि बच्चे ही सबसे अधिक सुन्दर फूल होते हैं।

जाड़े की एक सुबह दानव ने एक वृक्ष को सफेद फूलों तथा चाँदी जैसे फलों से लदा देखा। उसी के नीचे वह छोटा बालक खड़ा था। दानव दौड़ कर बालक के निकट गया। उसने बालक की हथेलियों एवं पैरों पर कील ठोके जाने से बने दो धाव देखे। वह क्रोध से चिल्ला उठा कि मैं उस क्रूर व्यक्ति की जान ले लूँगा। पर बच्चे ने हँस कर कहा कि ये घाव तो प्यार के घाव हैं। उसने आगे कहा कि वह तो उसे अपने बगीचे, जो स्वर्ग है, में ले जाने के लिए आया है। दानव का मृत शरीर दोपहर में वृक्ष के नीचे पाया गया।
